Ponggol Nasi Lemak Capitol Singapore (new outlet) – Which dishes to pick?

Ponggol Nasi Lemak Capitol Singapore (previously Capitol Piazza) is the latest new outlet of this popular nasi lemak restaurant in Singapore. It is located at Basement 1, next to the Food Republic food court. Established since 1979, Ponggol Nasi Lemak is one of the names that often gets mentioned when discussing which is the best nasi lemak in Singapore.

Despite its name, Ponggol Nasi Lemak does not have any outlet in Ponggol. Apart from Ponggol Nasi Lemak Capitol, their other outlets are in Jalan Besar, Upper Serangoon and Tanjong Katong. They might have had a presence in Ponggol or Tampines in the earlier part of their history, but I am not sure. The new outlet is a modern take on the traditional nasi lemak stall. The seating area has the usual tables and stools, but the food is deliciously displayed in a well lit, sparkling stainless steel display unit.

The food items were neatly displayed. The usual nasi lemak components such as fried egg, small kunning fish and chicken wings were present. Also available were more unusual items such as deep-fried prawn and cuttlefish balls. One of my dining companions thought that the food selection at Capitol Piazza was less extensive than at their other outlets.

Here is a picture of the Ponggol Nasi Lemak Capitol menu. There are some set meal options ranging from $5.90 to $8.90. We chose to design our own dish by selecting from the food items on display. The coconut milk flavoured rice costs $1.40. Drumsticks and chicken wings cost $3.50 and $1.90 each. The most expensive items were the large prawns and Signature Spicy Assam Squid that cost $5.60 and $6.90 each respectively.

Our Lunch Selection

Here is a picture of our lunch selections. We picked our respective favourites to make our preferred combination of nasi lemak selections.

The two core ingredients – the lemak rice and the chilli were very good. The rice was fragrant and the chilli had the right balance of sweetnes and spiciness. So I think you can’t really go wrong at Ponggol NL. Our least favourite item was the prawn. It seems to have been deep-fried with the shell on, yet not strong enough for the shell to disintegrate on eating.

My Perfect Combination

I had the chance to sample various items from our plates. I thought that the best nasi lemak items at Ponggol Nasi Lemak Capitol Piazza were the otah ($1.90), shrimp floss ($1.50), vegetable curry ($1.20) and the chicken drumstick. This would be my combination when I go there again. The ikan kunning was very good as well but I think they require too much effort to eat.

Our lunch at Ponggol Nasi Lemak Capitol Piazza ended with tapioca cake ($3.80) and kopi ($1.60). The tapioca cake was not bad. The coffee was very good.
