Located in the Shaw Foundation Alumni House at the fringe of the Kent Ridge grounds of NUS, the University Club is a restaurant catering primarily to the NUS staff and alumni, but is also open to the public. Operated by the Prive Group which has several F&B outlets in Singapore, the University Club serves a western style cuisine with an Asian twist.
We had two starters – the spicy grilled squid ($16) and the miso broth foie gras ($24).
The foie gras was very creamy and went well with the miso broth. It was a generous portion of foie gras but was still manageable because it did not have a strong livery taste. The spicy squid was gently grilled. It was of good consistency although we would have preferred it to be slightly more grilled to get a smoky flavour. Both were very well presented.
For mains, we ordered a pan fried Spanish mackerel fillet ($24) and miso glazed egg plant ($18).
A vegetarian dish, the egglant was juicy and very well complimented with the miso sauce. The mackerel was fresh but was a tad dry. The olive oil and capers rescued the dish.
Although out of the way, the University Club is a nice place to go for a quiet dinner in an elegant restaurant with the attendance of professional staff. We were told that lunch is a different story as it is full house most of the time. Although the prices are not low, they are reasonable. If you are an NUS staff or an NUSS alumni member, the price gets even more attractive with a 25% discount. The only negative we can see is the limited menu. Once you are here for a few times, you would have basically covered most of the menu items. Hopefully the menu is refreshed frequently enough.
