Croute (pronounced “krut”) at Valley Point is a great place to have brunch. Being essentially a bakery opened by chef-owner Bouk Cebula, the emphasis is on freshly baked bread and sandwiches; but there are other options such as eggs Benedict, pasta, risotto, chicken skewers and fish & chips. They also offer specials, that change from time to time, like BBQ pork ribs or vegetarian lasagna.
The spacious cafe is simply but nicely decorated with a few whimsical touches. It has a quiet communal atmosphere. You order and pay for your food at the counter and help yourself to the cutlery, napkins and sauces. You take a table number and food and drinks will be served.
Croute carries a wide range of breads including olive ciabatta, green tea viennoise, sesame epi, walnut & fig bread and, off course, the baguette. While we were there, a number of customers walked in simply to buy breads, which we were told were baked fresh twice daily.
We felt we must try their bread platter ($9) which came with a choice of 3 homemade dips. For the dips we chose the french onion, celery coriander salsa and bacon potato salad. The breads were nicely toasted and the dips were interesting and tasty.
We also ordered the Spanish Pork Tortilla, the Croute Burger as well a salad, sandwich and wrap.
The food was served promptly and each dish was generally well put together in sensible portion size. The Spanish pork was tasty. As with the other dishes, the sauces added to the dish were flavourful and enhanced the dish. The spiced avocado-yogurt dressing transformed the usual salad to a “Super Salad” with an interesting and delightful taste.
To end off we had the Banana Cake ($4.50), Lemon Crumb Bar ($5.50) and Choco Mousse Cake ($7). They came in rather thin slices and were good but not great. We found the cinnamon toast that came with the cappuccino the best of the sweet stuff.
The staff was cheerful and courteous and in general provided very good service. No service charge was added to the bill.
Croute is a place where you can have home-style food at reasonable prices. There is a calm comfortable feel about the place. It is a great cafe to enjoy a meal with family or friends at an unhurried pace.
