For a relatively small mall, the Star Vista at Buona Vista has a large number of Japanese restaurants. The addition of Gan Yakitori on the second floor increases the already wide range of Japanese dining options. Enter the restaurant and you are greeted with an attractive display of fresh food along the counter, waiting to be grilled. This is alcoholics haven as there are wall-high shelves lined with bottles of sake. To further tempt you, they are giving a 20% discount off all alcoholic drinks until 31 July 2014.
The yakitori menu was quite extensive and a wide selection of different parts of chicken anatomy is available. We selected a mixed bag of yakitori and some non-yakitori items. It is fair to say that all the skewered meats were very well done, with the right amount of seasoning and the right measure of cooking. The yakitori items in general range from $2 to $6.50, with some items served as double sticks and some singly. What we thought stood out were the wing (mid-joint), chicken with leek, gizzard and the potato wrapped with bacon. Grilled food and beer is one of the best food combos ever, so we ordered some Sapporo draft beer ($8 less 20% each).
As for the non-yakitori items, we tried the mixed oden ($10), cold soba ($4.50) and grilled squid ($18). The squid was very juicy and well grilled, leaving it moist and with just the right amount of chewiness. The soba was a light and refreshing end to our meal. The only disappointment of the day was the oden. The oden items were quite plain and lacklustre.
This is an interesting place to chill out with a couple of beers and good food. Stick with the yakitori/grilled food and you will be safe. For those looking for a quick and simple meal, there are some set lunches available ranging from $12.80 to $14.80.
