Smoke House Charcoal BBQ @ Great World City

SmokeHouse6

Smoke House is the first of its kind retail and self-service Japanese BBQ restaurant in SIngapore.   You can purchase many kinds of meats, other types of food  and beverages at its retail area and then cook them yourself over a BBQ stove in the dining area.  Is this the perfect solution to having the experience of a BBQ meal without the hassle?

The selection of meat is very wide, ranging from some super premium wagyu beef (more than $30 per 100 gram) to more humble items like sausages and chicken wings ($4 per small plastic tray).  There are also vegetables and seafood.  We ordered a mixed selection : Japanese wagyu flap meat (70 grams @$27.80 per 100 gm = $19.45); US ribeye (88 gm @ $15.80 per 100 gm = $13.90); Australian short rib (52 gm @ $12.80 per 100 gm = $6.65), squid ($4.75); shishamo ($4); sweet potato ($4), Asahi super dry ($6.50).   As you can see, each item may be small but can cost a lot and the small items can add up.  Note that there is a cover charge of $8 per person and a minimum purchase of $10 per person.  There is a free flow of a small selection of soup and salad.

After you have made payment, a table is set up for you and you can start cooking. You help yourself to the soup, the salad,  utensils and the sauces that you need.

The wagyu beef was very good but at $19 for a few thin slices, it better be.  The rest of the items were normal-tasting and you have to be very alert when cooking because the stove is very efficient.  The ventilation is good and the restaurant was smoke-free. Our total damage for a light lunch for two was $75.   As a self-service place, you are quite busy getting stuff or cooking and so this was not a relaxing lunch. Finally, we felt that in order to do justice to the premium beef, it ought to be handled by a real chef and not amateurs like us.   Eating them off plastic plates using disposable chopsticks seem disrespectful.

Smoke House also serves self-service Japanese shabu-shabu.  Everything described above applies except that you purchase food suitable for the steamboat rather than the grill and a different type of stove is set up for you.
