This strange looking object is a slice of cake by Cafe M from New York. They had recently opened a couple of outlets in Singapore, one of which is located in the newly created F&B zone, Dining Edition, in Marina Square.
Combining French pastry techniques with Japanese precision, their cakes are light and fresh. Their signature cake is the Mille Crepe cake. There were two versions on the menu – vanilla and green tea. We ordered the vanilla version ($8 a slice). Made up of many layers of paper-thin crepes and pastry cream in between, the cake is caramelised at the top. It was indeed delicious.
We ordered another type of cake – the Gateau Aux Marrons ($7.50 a slice) which was an almond flour cake topped with whipped cream and chestnut cream. The cake has a strange appearance when viewed from the thick end of the wedge (see top photo), but do not be put off by its looks. Fortunately, the generous amounts of cream spread on and around the cake were very light and looked heavier than it tasted. The nuts and mixed flavours in the cake combined well. We actually thought this was better than the much heralded Mille Crepe cake.
Together with their chocolatey cappacino ($5), Lady M’s cakes should be able to bring a sweet note to your day.
