The Hideout – a Cosy Cafe at Cassia Crescent (Closed)

Hideout-10

If you need a good cup of coffee in a cosy cafe away from the crowds, the Hideout will be a place to head to. Located at Cassia Crescent in the Old Airport Road heartlands, the Hideout cafe can be a tranquil retreat away from the glitz and hurriedness of downtown Singapore. It is a bonus that it has a nice range of delectable artisan ice cream and pretty good coffee.

The Hideout

The cafe is at the end of a row of HDB shops. Next to it are a trading firm and a shop selling traditional paper lanterns made on the premises.

The interior decor of the Hideout is modest but pleasant and inviting. Full height glass panels let in plenty of natural light. You get a nice view of a simple landscaped children’s playground.

The Hideout

At the Hideout you get a glimpse of Singapore life quite different what you may get sitting in a cafe in Marina Bay or Orchard Road. The clientele here is nothing like those in a tai-tai’s paradise. We did not see well-groomed ladies with svelte figures talking about Pilates and manicure. Instead we saw retirees, students in uniform, children with their grandmothers and the average office workers on their way home. It was like seeing neighbours coming as they were to enjoy a simple meal or to indulge in some deserving desserts.

The Hideout Cafe

The Hideout

The Hideout is basically a cafe for ice cream or gelato. They have a wide array of ice cream that are made fresh daily, with no preservatives. With flavours such as Passionfruit Beer Sorbet, Mao Shan Wang and Bubblegum, the ice cream can be enjoyed in cups, cones or with baked buttermilk waffles. They also serve cakes and brownies and have added pasta and pizza to their menu.

The Hideout

We went there for dinner and ordered a Pizza Grecia ($12.90) and a Spaghetti Bolognese ($11.90). The thin crust pizza was topped with ground beef, shiitake mushrooms and feta cheese. The crust was light and crispy and toppings were flavourful. The pizza was enjoyable but not very substantial though.

The Spaghetti Bolognese had layers of flavour meld together in a balanced way. There was an element of sweetness in the beef lightly coated with tomato sauce. The simple pasta dish was nice and satisfying.

We had Salted Caramel ice cream ($4 per scoop) for dessert. It was ice cream of good quality – rich and delightful.

Their coffee was served in a simple glass but the dark roast Arabica coffee was smooth and had a strong flavour.

The Hideout

The prices for their coffee are reasonable – $3.50 for an espresso and $4.80 for latte or cappuccino. They have a young enthusiastic service crew. It was easy to overlook minor shortcomings on their part because they were courteous, vivacious and smiley.

The Hideout is really a great ice cream parlour that also has good coffee and decent food. It is unpretentious and cosy. A 5 minute walk from the nearest MRT station or bus-stop gets you to the cafe. There are ample surface parking lots round the corner and a multi-storey car park across the road. For the real tai-tai, the chauffeur can even drop you off right at the entrance of the cafe.

#Street fact – Cassia Crescent is named after the tropical Cassia tree. Cassia fistula (or golden shower tree) was one of the flowering trees introduced along public roads during the Garden City Campaign of Singapore in the 1960s.
