MacRitchie Reservoir evokes fond memories for many Singaporeans. A hill-top restaurant within the reservoir park along the reservoir edge ought to be a winner. Vava Bistro @ MacRitchie could have provided an extraordinary dining experience in the luscious and unique location, but did not. The food was fine but everything else was just a little below par.
Set amidst the lush greenery with a view of the waters, Vava Bistro has an outdoor bar area and an indoor lounge with lavish burnt orange high back sofas. The main dining area is in a glass house which gets plenty of natural light. The air-conditioned dining area is set up to resemble a patio. You can enjoy the view of nature without having to endure the humidity, heat or mosquitoes.
Our lunch at Vava did not get off to a good start because although there was a sign at the door which said “Please wait to be seated”, there was no staff at the door and no one came to us while we stood there for quite a while. After a short wait, we decided to walk in and approach someone to ask for a table. Having being shown to a table and given their menu, we spent some time studying the menu and debating what to order. When we were ready to place our order, we were told that during weekends only the brunch items on the menu were available. Back to the drawing board.
We settled for the English Breakfast with Sausage ($15.80) and the 3-Egg Gourmet Omelet with toasted brioche and baked beans ($11.80), both of which came with hash brown and greens. Cappuccino was at $6.50. When the food eventually arrived, we were a little disappointed with the lack of effort in the visual presentation department. The food did not look enticing. With expectations lowered, when we tucked in, the food actually tasted quite good.
It might be that we caught them at a bad time but it would appear that they lack well-trained and experienced staff. The premises could also do with a little sprucing up as some fixtures and fittings were looking old.
It is such a pity that the place with so much potential was not fully exploited. Perhaps Vava Bistro is a place to go in the evenings. It should look beautiful and romantic as the sun sets; and after a few cocktails and beers everything else may seem more enjoyable.

#Location fact – The Impounding Reservoir along Lornie Road was completed around 1868 and was expanded in 1891. It was renamed Thomsom Reservoir in 1907. Its name was changed to MacRitchie Reservoir in 1922 after James MacRitchie, who was the Municipal Engineer of Singapore who oversaw the 1891 expansion.
