Ten mouths speaking is not the same as an eye seeing – a Thai proverb expressing the idea that words are often inadequate to describe an experience. Much has been written about the Folks Collective in China Square Central but we wanted to experience the charming Thai restaurant for ourselves. Having being there, we think Folks Collective must be the coolest Thai restaurant in Singapore.
There is just a buzz about the place and the cheerful casual atmosphere is simply great. The vintage interior decor is beautiful – with touches of humuor. The staff members were courteous and friendly. They seemed to be enjoying their work as they were joking with each other and chatting with the customers; even when the place was busy during lunch.
The drinks list offers a very wide range of spirits, liqueur, beer, wine and cocktails with eye-catching names like “Love You Long Time”, “Even Thai Girls Cry”, “50 ft. Woman” and “Concubine Siam”.
Folks Collective has the full range of traditional Thai favourites plus fusion items like Siam Spaghetti and Papadum Crackers.
The set meals in throwback vintage tiffin carriers at the price of $9.90 were simply irresistible. There were 4 sets to choose from. We had the Set B : Minced Shrimp Omelet + Green Chicken Curry + Steamed Jasmine Rice; and Set D : Grilled Lemongrass Chicken + Papaya Salad + Isaan-Style Sticky Rice. The green chicken curry was of good standard. The rest of the dishes were fine but not outstanding. We enjoyed their refreshing cold drinks : Thai Iced Black Tea and Lemongrass with Honey ($3.50 each).
Folks Collective is a snazzy unpretentious place. It is easy on the eyes and has a convivial atmosphere. The set lunches are reasonably priced and not bad for a quick weekday lunch; and they have so much more to offer in terms of food and drinks. This interesting restaurant bar in the middle of CBD seems like a great place to enjoy a Thai experience of eating, drinking and merry-making. An evening at the Folks collective could be the closest thing in Singapore to a night out in Bangkok itself. You might not hear “Love You Long Time“, but you can drink one.
