Have you ever tried gula melaka kopi cham teh? If not you might want to drop by this cafe. Owl brand coffee is a household name for local coffee, having been in the coffee business for more than 50 years. They are apparently diversifying into the f & b business with their Owl Cafe concept, which features local food together with their coffee. We tried out their outlet, Owl Cafe @ Star Vista.
The Owl Cafe is located on the second floor. It is attractively laid out with a bright, cheerful decor with a touch of industrial chic. It is no surprise that they serve a wide range of teas and coffees (local style – not the expresso machine variety) from the usual kopi-o, ice teh c to more exotic ones like charcoal roasted coffee and the one mentioned above. As for food, they have a limited but interesting menu ranging from otak otak toast to laksa and stir-fried spaghetti with soft shell chilli crab! We sampled a few items.
The crispy duck spring onion prata ($5.80) was a strange but delicious combo of Chinese style duck encased within a roll of Indian prata. There were thick slices of duck. The prata skin was toasted and slightly crisp. Very nice and creative! The chicken drumlets marinated with red fermented beancurd (4.80) was yummy. The fermented beancurd marinate providing a subtle complexity to the super crisp deep-fried drumlets. This would go so well with beer!
We also tried a more main-stream item – curry chicken and rice ($5.80). The curry had the right amount of spiciness and viscosity. The chicken pieces were meaty and substantial. We think the coffee folks at Owl have done a good job with the food as well. Owl Cafe @ Star Vista is a nice casual dining place. The only thing we did not like was that they charge for plain water ($0.30).
