We were fortunate to be invited to spend a day at the races at the Singapore Turf Club which has excellent facilities in Kranji, in the northern part of Singapore. The star attractions of the day were of course the horses and their racing which we shall be happy to talk about another time. This being a food blog, we focus on something almost as important – the food.
Being up in a private box area, we were in a comfortable place to be in for the afternoon. Our lunch at the Singapore Turf Club was a massive buffet lunch. There was a large appetiser section which was interesting with salad selections, sliced smoked duck, shrimp cocktail and many other items.
The mains section was comprehensive with items like herbal prawn, hamburg beef and the usual buffet suspects. They all tasted good and were comparable to the standard served at major hotels. We did not take more pictures of the mains as they looked ordinary and the place was quite busy. What was really interesting were the “action stations” that were set up and individual portions were cooked on request. They were al very good but if we have to rank them, it will be as follows. In first place, by a neck, was the odds-on favorite, the spaghetti aglio olio with soft egg. This was so well made it had a gourmet restaurant quality.
The second and third placings were close and was a photo finish. Second place goes to the lamb kebab with chutney and third place to bee hoon soto. Both dishes were well made and tasted like those served at restaurants specializing in these items.
There was of course a good selection of desserts which we sampled a few of. By then we were already full so we were quite happy to forego most of the dessert. It was an enjoyable day indeed at the races.
