A new section of Tanjong Pagar’s Icon Village is filling up with eateries. Sumire, an established yakitori restaurant in Tokyo, has a new outlet there. The restaurant is named “Sumire” because the word “smile” is apparently pronounced as “Su-Mi-Le” in Japan; and Sumire Yakitori House hopes to bring smiles to every one of their patrons.
Things got off to a good start when we were offered complimentary cabbage as appetizers. The simple salad of raw chunks of cabbage served with Japanese salt dressing was refreshing and delicious.
Sumire uses the electronic tablet menu and ordering system. We found it easy to use; so easy that we got a bit carried away and ordered more than we should. We had skewers of pork, beef, chicken, egg-plant, avocado and more.
Their skewers came in small plates of 2 or 3 skewers per plate ($2.90 to $4.90 per serving), and with a variety of sauces and toppings – such as teriyaki sauce or plain salt for the chicken skewers, and black pepper sauce or mayo and cheese for the meatballs.
We particularly enjoyed the eggplant with chicken miso paste and the grilled avocados with salt. The meatballs were juicy and tender. The chicken skewers were disappointing as we found the meat to be too dry.
We also had the tiger prawns with sumo miso as well as with garlic mayo ($4.90) and the grilled squids with teriyaki sauce ($8.90). The squid was really big and juicy. Both the squid and prawns were well grilled and delicious.
We also like their crispy gyoza ($5.90) and the crispy seasoned chicken ($6.90). Both were very tasty but a bit oily.
Sumire Yakitori House has many more items on their menu including fish, sashimi, omelette, rice bowls, ramen, udon and desserts.
On the whole we had an enjoyable lunch. It would have been even more enjoyable if the service was little better. They also had some minor issues, like air-conditioning and pacing the serving of food, to sort out. As the outlet at Icon Village is new, we hope things will improve with time because we do like place. It is a cosy restaurant that serves a wide range of yakitory items at reasonable prices. The food is generally of the standard you would expect of a good Japanese yakitory house; and the cold draft beer at the promotion price of $5 certainly brought on a few smiles.
