This tea room & restaurant is inspired by Queen Marie-Antoinette, famous for her extravagance and supposed fine taste. It seems fitting that Antoinette Cafe finds a home in Palais Renaissance, an exclusive shopping mall in Orchard Road associated with well-heeled shoppers and those with a taste for luxury living and deluxe lifestyle. It has an all-day dining menu that encompasses their specialities – luxurious pastries and confectionery.
Antoinette at Palais Renaissance is decorated to resemble the outdoor gardens of Versailles complete with a pavilion under the skylight. The furniture is of course ornate and opulent in the classic French decorative style – even the baby chairs are specially made in that style.
We went there for brunch and ordered the Classic Eggs Florentine ($16.50), Club Honey Baked Ham Sandwich ($17) and the Burger Royale ($22).
The eggs florentine, served on toasted brioche, came with Serrano ham and a creamy sauce. The dish was quite enjoyable.
The club sandwich was delicious but quite difficult to eat without making a mess.
The burger had pan-fried beef patty on brioche bread with aged cheddar cheese and tomato relish. The dish was above average and enjoyable.
As Antoinette Cafe is well known for its cakes and pastries, we ordered a Strawberry Shortcake ($8.0) to share, with our Cappuccino ($6.30) and Cafe Viennois ($6.80), which was served with creme Chantilty on the side. The cake was very nice and rounded off our brunch on a sweet note.
Overall, the food fared well and the place had a laid back atmosphere despite its ornate decor. It is a good place for an unhurried brunch or afternoon tea.
