This cafe in Joo Chiat Road is for “Vegan and Love”. We can’t figure out the “love” part, but we like the bright yellow theme of the decor and the vegan food served by the Loving Hut.
There is an outdoor coffee counter where takeaway sandwiches and coffee are available. A few tables are available for those who prefer outdoor seating.
Inside there is a small retail corner and a mix of tables, counters and chairs and stools of various shapes and designs. Whimsical drawings, posters, paintings and photos adorned the walls.
All of the food served in Loving Hut are purely plant-based. You would thus expect the menu to be quite limited and uninteresting. On the contrary, this vegan cafe offers Western, Asian and Peranakan fusion cuisines and local hawker delights. You get a wide choice of starters, sandwiches, crepes and pastas plus dishes such as almond crumb fillet, banana leaf nasi campur and teochew mee pok. The desserts and drinks are also interesting. There is also a daily lunch special for $6.90.
I ordered the Nyonya Organic Brown Rice Set for $9.90 and a Rose Lemon Juice ($4.90). The rice set came with clear soup and plenty of vegetables and what looked like beef rendang. The “mock meat’ was made of mushroom stems. Cooked with rendang suace, the mushroom had a nice texture and did taste almost like an authentic nyonya dish, but not quite. It was still a healthy enjoyable dish. The Rose Lemon Juice looked really pretty in pink and was refreshing.
The concept of the Loving Hut is to use environmentally friendly and healthy, high quality ingredients to create delicious food. I would say that my lunch was quite enjoyable and the price was reasonable. Free flow of ice water is also a plus point. The Loving Hut is a really nice casual cafe with sufficient variety of food to appeal to vegans and non-vegans alike.
