Located on level 2 of Orchard Central, Cafe Mondo is a halal certified ice cream cafe which also offers coffee, herbal teas and reasonably priced meals. They serve Kapiti Ice Cream from New Zealand. For the indecisive or one who wants to try many flavours of ice cream, Cafe Mondo offers a Six Packs as well as a Mini Twelve Putts. Superstitious golfers may want to avoid the Twelve Putts which is really 12 flavours of ice cream in mini-scoop size.
We had brunch at Kilo at PACT, Orchard Central recently. After siting on the hip high stools at Kilo at PACT, we decided to have coffee at some place with more comfortable seats for ordinary patrons. Cafe Mondo seemed ideal with a casual contemporary decor and nice cushioned chairs. We were also tempted by the colourful display of enticing ice cream.
We ordered our coffee – Americano ($4.50) and Cappuccino ($5.20) – a Layered Nuttela Krounut ($5) and the Mini Twelve Putts. The price of the Twelve Putts is $16.90 if you let the house choose the 12 flavours of ice cream. If you want to choose the 12 scoops of ice cream yourself, the price is $19.90. The price of freedom of choice is a premium of 17.75%. Now you know the answer to the question “What is the price of freedom of choice?”.
We chose not to choose, so as to avoid the “freedom premium”. When the tray of ice cream was served, we knew that we had to bear the costs of abdicating our right to choose. We felt the scoops of ice cream served were not as colourful as those on display. We got mostly pale looking ones and our favourite chocolate flavour was missing! We also had no idea what flavours we were trying. We could guess a few – passion fruit, strawberry and maybe cookies & cream. After a while, everything sort of tasted the same. Overall, the ice cream was not exceptional.
The Nutella Krounut looked very pretty. It was a doughnut shaped pastry with croissant layers and flavoured filling. Cafe Mondo’s Krounut was a variation of the Cronut, a croissant-doughnut pastry invented by Chef Dominique Ansel of New York City. The Nutella Krounut was as delicious as it was good looking. The Vittoria coffee served was what you would expect. No latte art though.
Cafe Mondo at Orchard Central serves brunch, lunch, dinner and tea. Their menu is quite extensive. They have items like Fish & Chips, Pizzas, Sandwiches, Sweet Potato Fries and Baked Macaroni. Some of the more interesting dishes include Waffle Sticks Triple Dips, Waffle with Triple Chocolate Ice cream, Beef Rendang with Achar Wrap and Waffle Beef Burger.
The cafe is a semi self-service cafe. It has a free seating concept and you order and pay at the counter. Collect your own utensils but the food will be served. Service charge was added to the bill but not GST.
Overall, Cafe Mondo at Orchard Central is a pleasant comfortable place for drinks and desserts. We might try their fairly reasonably price food items next time. If we are having ice cream there, we should remember the obvious – Six Packs is more desirable than Twelve Putts.
