Ô Comptoir is a French Creperie & Pub in the iconic “Rocket Building” at the junction of Circular Road and Lorong Telok. Their specialty is French galette or savoury buckwheat flour pancakes. We are more familiar with crepe which is made with white flour. Galette is essentially a crepe made with buckwheat flour and generally larger and thinner than the regular crepe.
Ô Comptoir offers traditional galette with emmental cheese and galette garnished with various combinations of egg, meat and vegetables. They also have interesting modern variations, inspired by cuisines from all over the world, with names such as Khao San Road, Nordic Inspiration and Chase the Spices.
Ô Comptoir has a stylish modern industrial design with a sea-side cafe feel. There is even a table where a swing serves as seats. It has an open air concept, meaning it is not air-conditioned. However, that also means that it is bright and airy and allows the five-foot way to be integrated seamlessly as part of the dining area. Ô Comptoir becomes a hip drinking spot in the evening and, thus, the bar has a prominent place in the creperie.
We went there for brunch on a weekend when Circular Road and Boat Quay were quiet and almost deserted. Road traffic was light and there was no problem finding a street parking lot.
Ô Comptoir offers a brunch set for $32. You get a beverage to start and a choice of a savoury galette or crepe, a choice of sweet item and a hot beverage to round off the meal. We decided to order from their a la carte menu and chose the Classic Vegie Diet Galette ($13) and the English Breakfast Galette ($16). The cappuccino and latte were at $6 each.
The food and drinks were served within a few minutes of our order. The English Breakfast Galette was a very thin and light pancake, crisp at the edges, filled with tomatoes, bacon, beans, sausages, mushrooms and topped with an egg. The Classic Vegie Diet Galette was filled with emmental cheese, egg and sauteed vegetables. We liked the thin airy pancakes especially the crispy part. The amount of cheese used in the Vegie Diet Galette was very generous; a little more than we would have preferred. On the whole, the galette we tried were fine but nothing to get excited about. We were also a little disappointed with the coffee, which seemed a bit weak.
They have an impressive list of french wine and ciders. We loved the bouncy music they played while we were there. From Wednesday to Saturdays, they have a DJ playing music till 2 am.
We like the bright and cheery atmosphere of Ô Comptoir. The galette we had for brunch was not outstanding. However, they have so many variety of filling, both savoury and sweet, to choose from. With the right filling, the galette can be a simple delectable treat. They also have croissants, scones, yogurt and even chocolate spring rolls. Ô Comptoir can be a very nice spot to have a leisurely weekend brunch or to while away an afternoon with a galette and a drink.
