Regular readers of this blog will probably know that we are partial to the breakfast served at Jones the Grocer. Perhaps it is the decor of the place. Eating amidst the gourmet food and wines being offered on retail gives the feeling of dining in a large spacious kitchen. Or maybe its the creamy coffee that has the right blend of acidity and body. Anyway, we found our way to Jones the Grocer at Mandarin Gallery and looked forward to another yummy breakfast.
We ordered a mixed selection among the four of us: the Jones big breakfast ($23), the egg and bacon wrap ($13), mushroom omelette ($18) and a Super Foods salad ($17) . They were flexible enough for us to order the salad even though that was strictly speaking a non-breakfast item which would have been available only after 11 am. The big breakfast (top photo) is really huge and contains the usual breakfast goodies. The flavours of the items were good. The free range eggs do seem to look better (bright orange yolks) and have a more substantial texture than the run-of-the-mill ones. This is really a nice way to start the day.
The other three items were more modest in size by comparison. The egg and bacon wrap is almost delicate. For those with a small appetite but still wish to have the a good ‘breakfasty’ light meal, this is it. The caramelised onions blended well with the Gruyere cheese to give a complex taste to the item. Those who like mushrooms should try the mushroom omelette. You can’t go wrong with the combination of eggs, mushrooms and truffle oil. Here the combination yields such a wonderful brew of earthy flavours, we wished that the portion was bigger. The dish came with a dollop of sheep’s feta cheese which had quite a strong taste. We left most of it on the side.
