We stopped by at the Spathe Public House along Mohamed Sultan Road for coffee recently. For something to nibble on while we chat, we decided to order a waffle for sharing. It was the best waffle we have eaten in a while.
Spathe Public House is decorated in a grungy, industrial style that is popular with many hipster cafes these days. The squarish skylight provided some relief from the dark and gloomy setting. The menu had some interesting items, such as Belgian waffle and fried chicken and waffle and pork belly. The Weekend Brunch Menu had the usual eggs items and things like rosti, beef rib fingers and lamb sausages. But for the fact that we just had lunch, we would have been happy to try these. Anyway, we ordered a simple Belgium waffle with nutella ($17) with a scoop of ice cream ($6).
As you can see both the waffle and ice cream were presented very beautifully. Almost too good to eat! The waffle was perfectly made. It was perfectly formed with all the square indentations straight and distinct, the colour was an even shade of light golden brown throughout. The nutella topping was expertly applied to form a layer of chocolate mesh. The scoop of strawberry ice-cream we ordered was not plonked on top of the waffle but thoughtfully served on the side with its own decoration.
As for taste, the waffle was really crisp and light. It has the almost melt in your mouth feeling. Really good. The strawberry ice-cream had a fresh fruity taste. Although the selection was made randomly, the combination of nutella, strawberry ice-cream on the light waffle was a success. We had actually expected the coffee to be very good here and the waffle was an after-thought. As it turned out, our long black and cappuccinos were just so-so but we discovered a great place for waffles!
