Angus Steak House at Takashimaya, Ngee Ann City

Angus Steak House Takashimaya11

Angus Steak House is a restaurant on the fourth floor of Takashimaya in Ngee Ann City and is adjacent to the children’s section of the department store.  We must have walked past this restaurant many, many times while shopping in Takashimaya over the past umpteenth years but never stepped foot into it … until now.

The restaurant is spacious, brightly lit and simply fitted out. We were there for dinner on a weekend and it was very well patronised. It would be advisable to make a reservation and at the same time request for a window seat that overlooks Orchard Road. There is an open-concept kitchen where you can see the chefs perform their work.  The steaks at Angus Steak House are obviously the stars on the menu but they have actually a wide and diverse variety of food.  Here are some random pages from their dinner menu. As you can see, it caters to all sizes of wallet, from  $21 spaghetti to  $189 wagyu steaks.

We ordered a 150g tenderloin ($54) and a 300g ribeye ($71). Being not overly fond of pinkish meats, we asked for them to be prepared medium-well.   We also took up the option of paying an extra $12 each to add an appetizer, soup, bread, salad and dessert to complete the dinner.

The extras that came with the $12 supplement were a bread roll and butter, a fried fish appetizer that was quite nice, a plate of salad with crunchy vegetables, a large portion of mushroom soup and a dessert which we will show you at the end of this post. While each item was modest in size, it all adds up. So if you intend to have the supplement (which we strongly recommend as it is good value for $12), you should take that into consideration and bear that in mind when you choose the size of steak.  By the time we were done with the above items and when our steak arrived we were already quite full.

The steaks were served on sizzling hot plates. They were quite thin cuts – around 1.5 cm for the tenderloin and 2 cm for the ribeye.  Taste-wise, they were similar but the ribeye had a bit more taste.   The 150g tenderloin turned out to be quite an adequate size for a small eater. The 300g ribeye turned manageable and not too large as we had feared. Not the most complex tasting of steaks, but perfectly acceptable.  For a five course steak dinner that averaged about $85 per head in the heart of Orchard Road in Singapore, we think this is quite reasonable. Payment with Takashimaya or JCB credit cards gets you a 5% discount.

Of course no steak meal will be complete without a suitably robust bottle of red wine. At Angus, there is a corkage charge of $20 per bottle.  Corkage-free BYO would have been better but $20 was not too bad. We brought along a 2005 Don Melchor – a full bodied red from Chile that was a good companion with the meats.

For dessert, there was a choice of tiramisu, cheese cake or a scoop of ice-cream. We decided on a tiramisu and a cheese cake which brought our steak dinner to a sweet and heavy ending.
