Top Beauty Foods

We like to eat well and look good. Eating well in Singapore is not a problem. Becoming more beautiful by eating tasty food is the challenge. Sometimes the top beauty foods and healthy foods recommended are either tasteless or they look like food for cows or Martians. Some superfoods reputed to be good for skin health are so exotic that by the time we find them we would have added a few more lines to our faces. We set out to discover beauty foods that we find enjoyable and easily available in restaurants and cafes in Singapore. So we now have The Ordinary Patrons’ list of favorite beauty foods which are easily available in Singapore.

Before we start on the list of “beauty foods”, we must say that we really only know how to eat and know very little about nutrition, food science or skin health. So do take everything with a pinch of salt (but not too much, as scientific studies have shown that excess intake of salt raises blood pressure 🙂 ). Most of the information here about the nutrients found in food and their effects on skin health are derived from the resources and articles found on the website of the National Health Promotion Board and the publication Micronutrients and Skin Health by Linus Pauling Institute of the Oregon State University.

So here is the TOP beauty foods and where we found them in Singapore.

Cabbage

Cabbage is a low calorie vegetable rich in vitamins and nutrients which can help keep the skin clear and healthy and reduce skin aging. Purple cabbage is especially good. Cabbage also helps to promote formation of collagen, the cement that holds cells together and makes the skin feel smooth, and prevent the appearance of wrinkles.

Cilantro

Cilantro, also known as coriander, is a beauty food with many minerals, essential oils and vitamins which help to promote clear skin. It helps to remove heavy metals from our system, particularly from the expanded fat cells which cause the appearance of cellulite. By helping digestion, Cilantro also indirectly contributes to healthy, beautiful skin.

Cilantro is often added as garnishing and can be found in the ingredients of many dishes such as in Ayam Sio available in Peranakan restaurants. Try something more exotic like cilantro butter gel by ordering the Fjord Trout at  Osia – one of the best restaurants in Sentosa.

Eggs

Eggs are a source of protein and also contain riboflavin and biotin, essential vitamins for healthy skin. Proteins are necessary for cell and tissue repair and for the construction of collagen, a basic structure of skin.

Lobster

Lobster has high zinc content. Zinc is a necessary mineral which helps to stabilise cell membranes and maintain the collagen that keeps skin firm. Zinc also protects the skin by absorbing ultraviolet radiation.

Salmon

Salmon contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids which are crucial to skin function and appearance. Fatty acids help to prevent skin damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) light and skin aging. It means that eating salmon can help prevent wrinkles, loss of elasticity and skin pigmentation.

It provides anti-oxidant vitamins which help prevent cell damage induced by free radicals. Additionally, watercress is rich in calcium and iodine, which can help prevent a dull complexion.
