The residents of the Ridgewood Condominium are fortunate people. Did you know that there are a few restaurants, a clinic, a convenience store, a laundry and a couple of other shops located within their compound? So, in addition to living in a lovely Hawaiian-themed condominium in the posh district 10 of Singapore, they have all these amenities at their doorstep. We found out that ordinary people like us who are not residents of the condo can also have access to these shops. We recently stopped by at the Thai restaurant, E-Sarn Thai Cuisine.
The shops and restaurants at Ridgewood condominium (let’s call them the “Shoppes at Ridgewood” since there is no official name for them) are found in a compound which has its own fences and gates. One gate leads straight into the swimming pool area and is used by their residents with security passes. The other gate (shown above) opens out to the road (Ridgewood Close) and is accessible by anyone. There are some roadside parking spaces available. (Can you see the scary cat on the wall? Scroll down for a clearer view.)
The E-Sarn menu contains the usual Thai dishes. We selected a few simple items for a quick meal.
We started off with a plate of spring rolls ($7.50). They were light and crispy. Not much taste but a pleasant dish to start the ball rolling. We ordered some baby kai lan ($8.50) and a claypot beef ($14.50) to go with steamed rice ($1.50 per person).
The kai lan was very delicate and thin-leafed, almost lettuce-like in texture. The vegetable was crunchy and fresh. Lightly cooked with some oyster sauce, it was a simple but tasty dish. In contrast, the beef claypot was served in a big portion and had a very heavy taste. Chunks of beef were cooked in a dark soy sauce based gravy. This is a dish that goes very well with steamed rice. The beef was well cooked but we would have preferred it to be even softer. We did not have space for dessert after this heavy dish.
The Shoppes at Ridgewood is a quiet laid back row of shops. As far as I can remember the other restaurants are a cafe, a pub and one or two others which did not leave an impression. You can stop by if you are in the Holland Road / Ulu Pandan area to check out the place. If you like cats, there are a few fat cats lazing around the place. The one on the wall looks like the top cat.

most of the older condo in singapore usually have shops, most of the time will have
one zhi char stall.
Looks like E-Sarn is the Zhi char stall to the residents here.
