Paradise Dynasty Restaurant at One KM Mall (Closed)

Paradise Dynasty 乐天皇朝, part of the Paradise Group of restaurants, is well known for its colourful Xioa Long Baos. The Chinese restaurant serves both northern and southern Chinese cuisine and have a good range of reasonable priced dishes on its menu. Tanjong Katong is a renowned dining destination but there is a lack of full service Chinese restaurant with space and a nice ambience in the area. Paradise Dynasty at One KM Mall fills that gap nicely.

Located on the second level of One KM Mall, Paradise Dynasty looks more upscale than what you would expect of a casual dining Chinese restaurant. The reception area looks elegant.  The narrow passage  to the main dining hall will lead you past the open kitchen where you can see the chefs at work. The restaurant interior is done up in a mix of contemporary and old Chinese tea house styles. The service staff in simple traditional Chinese robe, the use of vintage tableware and dark wood paneling help to recreate the atmosphere of dining in a Chinese inn of bygone era.

Xiao Long Bao, particularly the exotic colourful versions of the meat dumpling, is the signature dish of Paradise Dynasty. However, it has a fairly comprehensive menu offering a range of dim sum, la mian, fried rice and a variety of seafood, meat and vegetable dishes in Szechuan, Shanghainese and even fusion styles.

We ordered the traditional Xiao Long Bao (6 pieces for $7.30), pan-fried pork dumpling ($3.90), deep-fried garlic pork ($12.80) and egg fried rice ($6.80). We also asked for the pan-fried pumpkin pastry for dessert. Tea was $1.50 each and the unsolicited appetiser was $2.50. We should say that we enjoyed the appetiser very much. It was a green mango salad with sesame seeds and peanut sauce. It tasted like a mix of Thai mango salad with satay sauce. It was something unusual and quite delicious.

The steaming hot basket of Xiao Long Bao was the first to be served. We thought it was one of the best versions of Xiao Long Bao we have tried in Singapore. The skin was not very thin but the inside was juicy and tasty.

The other dishes came a short while after the Xiao Long Bao. The pork and fried rice came in very generous portion. They could easily be shared by 3 or 4 persons. The pork was nicely done with a crispy layer. The fried garlic flakes added an interesting dimension to the flavour of the dish. The pan-fried pork dumplings were quite big and looked puffed up. They did not look very appealing because of their pale complexion. However, the skin was well dried and the filling was really juicy. The pan-fried pumpkin pastry looked quite interesting but the taste was very ordinary.

We enjoyed our lunch at Paradise Dynasty. If we like simple tasty Chinese food in a comfortable air-conditioned restaurant in the Tanjong Katong area, we think Paradise Dynasty at One KM Mall is a great option. The service is friendly and efficient and the prices are reasonable. It is a bonus that parking is currently free at One KM Mall if you spend at least $30 in the mall.
