Jack’s Place Paya Lebar Square (Outlet Closed)

Jack's Place

We are familiar with the steaks and set lunches at Jack’s Place and have written about our visit to their outlet in the Jem Shopping Mall in Daily lunch deal at Jack’s Place. We were at Paya Lebar Square recently and had the chance to check out what Jack’s Place had to offer for dinner. No cheap set meal was available but the a la carte menu offered a good varied range of items.

Jack's Place

The restaurant in the basement of Paya Lebar Square was unmistakably a Jack’s Place restaurant. The signature green and white checkered design theme tells you that you are in Jack’s Place. However, there is no green and white checkered tablecloth. Instead, wooden table tops have motifs which remind you of the checkered tablecloth.  We thought it was a clever touch in modernising the look while retaining a clear link to the look and feel of the old and familiar. The interiors of Jack’s Place at Paya Lebar Square have a cheery contemporary look. It  looks more like an American diner than a typical Jack’s Place restaurant. There was no issue with ventilation in this outlet when we were there.

Beef noodles at Jack's Place

The menu is quite extensive. Steaks are of course available. Besides salads and soups, there are also escargot and oysters for appetizers. Seafood, chicken and local dishes are on the menu and, in addition, there are special monthly promotion items.

We ordered a beef kway teow ($12.80), grilled chicken ($14.50) and the New England fish & chips ($15.80). Water was served without asking and the familiar complimentary garlic bread came in a basket.  We did not have to wait long before the food was served.

The beef kway teow was of the expected standard. It was nice but the portion was quite small, considering its price. The grilled chicken came finely presented on a bed of vegetables and topped with a ring of pineapple with waffle fries on the side. The chicken was well marinated and nicely grilled. It was moist and flavourful and had a slight pleasant scent of BBQ smoke. The New England fish & chips were fairly ordinary. The batter was the smooth and light type rather than the crispy crunchy version which we would have preferred. All the dishes came with a good portion of vegetables which helped to ensure that a one dish meal could be a healthy and balanced one.

We enjoyed our dinner at Jack’s Place Paya Lebar Square. The service was friendly and efficient and the setting was casual and pleasant. We would certainly go there again. Besides steaks, they have quite a lot to offer. They also serve alcoholic beverages. So you can have a bottle of wine and read your newspapers there.
