Cola Cafe @ Paya Lebar Square (Closed)

Cola Cafe @ Paya Lebar Square  is a bright, colourful cafe that has opened for business at this mall. In case you have not heard of Paya Lebar Square, it is a new shopping mall that is situated in front of the large Singapore Post building.

From the look and feel of the place,  we would never have guessed that the Cola Cafe @ Paya Lebar Square is run by the folks who are behind the famous steak restaurant, Jack’s Place. There are however some giveaways – a sculpture of the Jack’s Place mascot, a chef holding a piece of beef, is displayed in the cafe. Jack’s Place napkins are used at the cafe.  I think you can play spot the Jack’s Place connections while at the cafe.

Cola Cafe is more than just a cafe. It also has a retail section selling some simple food and beverages which are probably aimed at the yuppie crowd. Craft beers, pasta, coffee beans, pre-packed food ready for heating up at home are some of the things you can buy here.

For dining in, there are the usual light cafe meals available such as pasta, pies and soup. Udders ice-cream is also sold here. We had just had lunch at the Ramen Keisuke in the same mall and were looking for a place for coffee.  Cola Cafe looked inviting and was empty except for one lonesome guy enjoying his cuppa while reading the Straits Times.  We ordered coffee and some cakes for sharing.

The Oreo cheese cake was light and well made.  At $4.50, it was reasonably priced.

The salted caramel cake ($5) did not look very interesting but it had a very good taste. We are happy to visit Cola Cafe again to eat these cakes.  You can see the insides of the cakes in the picture below.

The cakes were fine but the coffee was a different story. Perhaps she was a new member of the staff, our long black ($4.50) and latte ($5) took some time to make and tasted diluted. Did not look nice either. She was quite sheepish about it. Poor thing. They should let her practise more.

All in all, Cola Cafe @ Paya Lebar Square is a promising place, offering simple food and drinks in a pleasant environment. Free ice water and free Wifi are provided. No GST or service charge is added to the bill. For some reason, it has not appealed to the hordes of shoppers at the mall. For us that is a good thing as the peace and quiet of the cafe was a main attraction for us. Once they brush up their barista skills, this place will be perfect.
