Sukhothai Kitchen Bugis (Outlet Closed)

Sukhothai Kitchen Authentic Thai Cuisine

Just next to the swanky Bugis+, we found a stall selling cheap and good Thai Food. Located in a food court along Queen Street, Sukhothai Kitchen serves dishes created by a Thai chef and uses ingredients imported from Thailand. A wide range of Thai dishes are available. Their prices are reasonable and the quality of the food is good.

Sukhothai - Cheap and Good Thai Food

Much of Thai culture centres around food and the Thais love good food. So when we saw Thai tourists eating happily at Sukhothai Kitchen, we thought the food at that Thai food stall must be not bad.

Sukhothai Kitchen is a stall in a food court with a somewhat odd name of “Tastebud”. The small food court is done up to resemble a rustic Thai food shop. There are only a few stalls there but the most popular one is obviously Sukhothai Kitchen. You can get all the staple Thai dishes like tom yum soup, curries, noodles and fried rice. They also offer omelet, fish cakes, Thai salads as well as vegetables, chicken, pork and seafood cooked in a variety of ways.

We ordered a green curry with rice ($6), pad Thai ($6) and pineapple fried rice ($6). We also ordered the pandan chicken ($6) as a side dish. The order and payment were made at the cashier’s counter and we were given a buzzer. We could see the hive of activities in the small food preparation area behind the cashier; which led us to wonder about the fuss relating to the new trend of open kitchens in chic restaurants –  we always have “open kitchens” in our coffee shops and zhi char stalls.

Green Curry Sukhothai Kitchen

Green Curry with Rice, Sukhothai Kitchen

The green curry was a fairly simple looking dish. The curry was not thick nor creamy. The combination of sweet, sour and spicy tastes was very pleasant and the flavourful curry went well with steamed white rice. The fried egg on top of the rice was an unexpected bonus.

The pineapple fried rice was full of ingredients – pork floss, cashew nuts, raisins seafood and more. It was very tasty but perhaps a tad oily.

The pad Thai was very well done. The stir fried noodles came with loads of ingredients like seafood, eggs and bean sprouts. It took a few bites for the balanced, subtle flavours to come through. The noodles were tangy and a little spicy and had just the right chewiness.

The pandan chicken was well marinated and deep-fried in small batches. The chicken wrapped in pandan leaves was tender and aromatic. It had a complex  flavour – slightly sweet, tangy and nutty. It was enjoyable.

Sukhothai Kitchen is not a chic or stylish place but it has a certain simple charm. It serves a good variety of Thai dishes at reasonable prices. It is a place we would go to again for cheap and good Thai food.

#Street Fact – Queen Street is of course named after the Queen of England, but which one? The name of the street running parallel to Queen Street gives a clue. Queen Street and Victoria Street are named after Queen Victoria.
