Tucked away in a side lane off Tanjong Katong Road is a cosy cafe which serves good coffee and an interesting selection of mains for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Laneway Market is a proper eatery for a substantial meal which also serves serious coffee and tea. It has on its menu items such brownies, tarts, French toasts, risotto, pasta and pulled pork sandwiches.
Although its address is Tanjong Katong Road, the entrance and the cafe frontage are actually in a narrow side lane known as Boscombe Road. Apparently, the location in the side lane is the inspiration for the name “Laneway Market”.
The decor of the cafe is simple but nice. The use of wood, plants and dried flowers give the place a warm homely feel. There is a kind of laid back Katong hospitality and easy comfort that is recognisable the moment you walk into the cafe.
We ordered a mushroom risotto ($17) and a roasted chicken ($18). Ice cold water with fresh lemon slices was served without asking while we waited for our food. We could see the care and effort put into the preparation and presentation of the food.
The mushroom risotto pressed all the right buttons. The mushrooms were cooked dry to bring out a fresh and nutty flavour. The rice was well simmered in a rich stock and was creamy, plump and tender. It was topped with a sous vide egg. Everything combined well. The mushroom risotto may not look great but it was delicious.
The roasted chicken looked as good as those you would find in upscale fine dining restaurant. Two pieces of roasted herb chicken sat on top of a bed of truffle mashed potato and were drizzled with a creamy gravy. The outer layer of the chicken was crisp and tasty and you wished there was more of it but then you would find that inside was tender, juicy and delicious as well. The truffle mashed potato with lots of ingredients mixed in was tasty enough to be a dish but itself. The multi-dimensional roasted chicken dish was delightful and satisfying.
We had an apple crumble with ice cream ($13) for dessert. It did not look very exciting but was quite enjoyable. A glass of iced berry tea was $6.50 and a special Laneway Cuppa coffee was $6.
We like the Laneway Market and its unpretentious charm. The staff was attentive and friendly. We were really impressed with the mains served here which were interesting and tasty. Their coffee and tea were quite good too. Good food, good service, free iced water, free Wifi and no GST or service charge add up to great cosy cafe which we are happy to visit again and again. In fact, we have visited the Laneway Market a few times already.
