Pancake House of Tokio is a very attractive pancake restaurant on the ground floor of the Cathay Cineleisure mall, close to the main Orchard Road thoroughfare. We decided to eat there partly because it was so pretty and partly because it was deserted. An oasis of calm in the midst of bustling Orchard Road.
As its name suggests, Pancake House of Tokio serves many versions of pancakes. You can have pancake as a dessert, as a snack or as a meal. Here are some pages from their loose-leaf menu.
The pancakes range from $7 to $16 and the lunch specials at $15 looked quite enticing. We purchased the Teriyaking and Croque Madame lunch specials ($15 each) and coffee ($3 extra).
Each lunch set comes with a ‘fruit soup’ which was a cold yogurt drink with fruits. Very unusual ‘soup’ that has a refreshing taste. Feels healthy as well.
The other thing that comes with the set lunch was a salad. This was very nicely presented. It was a generous helping of vegetables. The olives enhanced the dish visually and in taste. No unhealthy salad dressing here. Just plain yogurt.
Our “Teriyaking” was a teriyaki chicken wrap using pancakes as the wrapping material. The seasoning in the teriyaki sauce was well-balanced and the whole wrap was enjoyable. The little side-dishes of fruits added splashes of colour to the dish.
In contrast, the croque madam was not very beautiful. It looked like a large pancake with a fried egg on top. Sandwiched between the pancakes was a substantial piece of ham. The portion was huge and heavy – enough to feed two people. But the taste was quite plain. Not bad but not memorable.
The coffee was good and well worth the extra $3 to complete the meal.
Overall, we were quite pleased with our meal at this pancake restaurant in Cathay Cineleisure. Although we enjoyed the peace and quiet, we felt that it was a pity the Pancake House of Tokio was not better patronised.
