We have cafes in bookshops and boutiques. We have cafes in bicycle shops and furniture stores. Now we also have a cafe in the office of an architecture and interior design firm – Avenue Cafe in Joo Chiat Road.
Avenue provides Architecture + Interior designs services as well as professional support services like building regulatory submissions and project planning. The place where you can go to meet the interior designer is also a cafe serving coffee, desserts and an interesting range of hot dogs.
Avenue Cafe is also a retail space. Clothes and accessories are on display. The furniture in the cafe is also for sale. The interior decor of Avenue is, as you would expect, quite nice and interesting. Different design elements can be seen and different design solutions are being showcased.
Avenue Cafe serves a good range of coffee and ice blended drinks as well as cakes and ice cream. Hot food and savoury dishes are limited. There are wraps and lasagna. Their list of specialty hot dogs is interesting with clever (some might say politically incorrect) names like Singapore “Hor-Log”, China “Re Guo” and Korean “Hait Dog”.
You place your order at the counter. The food and drinks will be served to you. No service charge or GST was added to the bill.
We ordered a beef lasagna ($12.80), Singapore Hor-Log ($8.90) and a Japanese Hottodoggu ($8.90). An Americano coffee was $4.50. The food preparation time was fairly long considering that there were not many patrons while we were there. However, you could browse through the magazines and check out the merchandise while you wait. We help ourselves to iced water from the water station in the mocked-up kitchen.
The lasagna was ordinary and like something you could get from the supermarket. The Japanese hot dog had the toppings of seaweed and cabbage with vegetable and fruit and sauces that were distinctively Japanese. It was an interesting and delicious hot dog. The Singapore Hor-Log was topped with balachan spiced archar and toasted peanuts. It would be interesting to try their other hot dog offering.
The coffee was strong and robust. We ordered a slice of their mango cake ($6.80). It was smooth and enjoyable.
Avenue Cafe is an interesting place and a good addition to the food scene in the Joo Chiat Katong neighbourhood (which was recently voted Time-Out best neighbourhood in Singapore). We would certainly return there if we like a good cup of coffee in a nice relaxed cafe in Joo Chiat. We are also curious to find out how their other hot dogs taste like.
