Monday lunch special at Spageddies @ Jem, Singapore

We continue our search for good lunch deals in Jurong East and were attracted by the “Monday Special” sign at Spageddies @ Jem. It is a casual Italian restaurant that seems to have the same look and feel as the first outlet that opened in Singapore many, many years ago. Dark interior, wood panelling, country-style decor and exposed canned food as part of the decor. Spageddies had over the years opened and closed branches in various locations in Singapore. They now have three locations – Jem, Orchard Central and the Changi Airport.

The display of canned food as part of the decoration has been toned down. But the traditional country-style still remains, together with some lush artificial trees. A bit old-fashioned but it does have a homely atmosphere.

There are three dining options for lunch at Spageddies @ Jem on weekdays. The regular menu, a lunch menu which has selected items from the regular menu at reduced prices (with set lunch options) and the daily special.  The daily special on the Monday was  “1-for-1 spaghetti”.  We opted for that as it meant a potential 50% discount from regular menu pricing.  Here are some pages from the regular menu.

Spaghetti strictly meant ordering from the Spaghetti section of the menu and does not include the pasta section. The 1-for-1 arrangement at Spageddies @ Jem works by the waiving the lower priced item.  We ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese and the Spaghetti with Sauteed Mushrooms ($13.50 each).

It is probably best to describe both the spaghetti dishes as competent but ordinary. The one with the sautéed mushrooms (above) had plump juicy mushrooms to add interest to the dish while the Bolognese (below) had some minced meat in the sauce.

Other than that, both dishes looked and tasted the same as the tomato sauce was the predominant taste. The different ingredients made their presence felt more in the texture than the taste of the sauces. Considering that these were the two most basic dishes on the menu, the overall result was not bad. Actually, we think this is a good place to take kids as they will be quite happy with this sort of pasta and will feel at home in this unpretentious place. The money you save by not going to more fancy places can be put to other good uses.

Spageddies @ Jem is a straight-forward Italian restaurant which brings back some memories of the old branches – such as the one in Tanglin Mall. The lunch time deals make Spageddies especially attractive. With service charge and GST, the total cost of lunch for two was $15.90.
