Saturday night at FYR Cycene Ond Drinc (Fire Kitchen and Drink) restaurant

FYR restaurant4

We had written about the FYR Cycene Ond Drinc restaurant before, but that was a visit in the daytime.  We were there for dinner recently and the mood and atmosphere is so different that we think it deserves a second post. This time it is Fire Kitchen and Drink (FYR Cycene Ond Drinc) restaurant by Night. On a Saturday night there was a duo singing and playing their unplugged versions of mostly hits from the 90s and 00s. As you can see, both the old and the young diners were quite taken by the two artistes.

The decor of the Fire Kitchen and Drink restaurant looked even more cave-like at night. This time we had a better look at the drawings which celebrates the discovery of fire, from which the name of the restaurant was derived.

The dinner menu is different from the brunch menu (see our earlier post on FYR for the brunch menu). It is quite limited in variety but should be diverse enough to satisfy most diners. Almost all the hot food items are cooked in their Josper Grill (see our earlier post on details of that).

Our starter was a baked aubergine and chickpeas ragout ($10). The slices of aubergine were grilled with a layer of mashed chickpeas. It is topped with a cap pf melted cheese. Thank goodness the cheese was not too ‘cheesey’. It was a good start to the evening. We liked the texture of the aubergine and the peas.

Our main courses were the whole Maine lobster ($35) and spiced deboned red snapper ($25). It always feels luxurious to eat a whole lobster. The lobster was not very big, but big enough to yield sufficient meat. We estimate its size to be about 600g. It was grilled with a layer of cheese. Very good. We will come back just to eat this.

The grilled red snapper was one half of quite a large fish. The centre part with the bones had been expertly removed. There was no bone remnants at all.  It looks very charred but the beauty of the Josper grill is its ability to impart a charred effect without drying out the centre. The meat of the fish was firm and white and still moist. Really good. There was also a generous bunch of salad on the side.

Our drinks were a Mac’s Great White beer ($8) and a Honey Lemonade ($4.50). Both were nice and refreshing and provided a good balance with the heatiness of all that grilled food.

All in all it was a great evening of smooth drinks, good company and nostalgic songs at the Fire Kitchen and Drink restaurant.
