Ginza Lion Beer Hall Suntec City, Singapore review

Ginza Lion-22

Ginza Lion Beer Hall Suntec CIty is located in the space where the HSBC Suntec CIty branch used to be located. It is at the former Carrefour end of Suntec, far away from the Convention Centre. The Ginza Lion Beer Hall looked like a German beer hall with a Japanese twist.  It is a beautiful looking beer hall.

The Ginza Lion Beer Hall Suntec CIty  is a large restaurant. True to the beer hall traditions, the decor was a plain wood-trimmed finish. Seats have dark faux leather cushions. But unlike traditional beer halls, this has a modern contemporary finish and the windows around two sides of the space gave it a bright, cheerful look.

While it is obvious that beer is the star beverage here, patrons who have preference for other kinds of alcoholic beverages will probably be satisfied with the large variety on display at the well stocked bar.

The food served here at Ginza Lion Beer Hall Suntec CIty is also similar to those you find at German beer halls. Meat and sausages are featured prominently. But there is also a wide range of other food such as pasta. Here are some pages from their menu.

The $50 weekend buffet feast with free flow of beer looks interesting and sounds like value for money for those with a healthy appetite. We ordered a mixed selection from the a la carte menu.

The Kagoshima pork katsu ($20) was attractively presented but we were not crazy about the generous amount of mayonnaise used. It also had some porky taste.  Not a lot and may not be noticeable by some, but it is something we are particularly sensitive to.

The soft-shelled crab spaghetti ($18) was a much better dish. Spaghetti with a smooth tomato sauce, topped with a whole soft-shelled crab. It was also a decent sized portion.

The roast beef sandwich ($18) looked beautiful but we did not really like it because : (a) there was too much mayonnaise; (b) the roast beef was present in the thinnest slivers. Not much meaty taste.  The fries were not bad though.

The best dish of the day turned out to be something we did not expect in a beer hall. The Asari white wine butter clams ($12) looked and tasted so good that it could be something you find at some high-end restaurant. The clams were clean tasting and the sauce was complex and creamy. If only they would toast the bread that came with this dish and it would be perfect.

No visit to a beer hall, whether Japanese or German would be complete without the beer.  We had the Sapporo draft beer in a  mug (600 ml for $16, happy hour price). A fresh tasting beer that helped to smoothen over any imperfections in the food.

We think that Ginza Lion Beer Hall Suntec CIty is a very attractive place for meeting up with friends for a drink or two. We can imagine this place filled by merry-makers after work hours. The beers are certainly good and reasonable priced. Whether the food is good is subjective and the correct selection is crucial. The next time we should avoid the heavy mayonnaise dishes and the dining experience may probably go up a few notches.
