Pepper Steakhouse & Bistro is a casual all day dining place for affordable steak and meats. The bistro at Great World City is part of the Pump Room group and has a wide range of beers and wine. The emphasis is on steaks but they have something for everyone for all times of the day – from breakfasts to lunch to late night drinks.
The baby blue pepper-shaker motif is seen all over the restaurant. The casual bistro is decorated like an old English steakhouse with high back leather seats but with elements of modern touches. A well stock bar features prominently.
Pepper Steakhouse & Bistro offers a wide variety of food. On weekends and public holidays they serve breakfast items like pancakes and Egg Benedict. They have a kids menu. Their all day dining menu offers starters such as pan-seared scallops and duck breast salad; mains like grilled cod, lamb rack, burgers, banger and mash, pastas as well as cheese platter and desserts. For their steak, they offer 5 beef types, namely New Zealand ‘Harmony’ Organic Fed Prime Beef, New Zealand Grass Fed ‘Savannah’ Black Angus Beef, New Zealand “Firstlight’ Grass fed Wagyu, New Zealand ‘Wakanui’ Grass Fed/Grain Finished and Australian “Harvey” Grain Fed Prime Beef.
We went there for dinner and ordered the Chef’s Soup of the Day ($8), which was cream of cauliflower soup, a Crispy Blue Swimmer Crab Cake ($12) and Australian Ribeye 200 g ($34). Iced water was offered without asking and we did not have to wait very long for our food. We were in fact quite surprised that, although the bistro was quite busy, our food was served within 10 to 15 minutes of ordering. The portions were of reasonable size.
The cauliflower soup was thick and buttery and quite enjoyable. The crispy crab cake came nicely presented with lots of dau miao. The crab cake was packed with lumps of potatoes and crab meat and broiled to a nice brown crust with crispy edges. We liked it.
The steak did not look very exciting but was well cooked as requested and delicious. The thick cut fries were good as well. The red wine sauce was not as strong as we would like yet still flavourful enough. The size of the 200 g steak was about just right for an average person, especially when you take into account the free flow of fries that would accompany any steak order.
The food at Pepper Steakhouse & Bistro was better than we had expected. The staff was courteous and efficient. They have kids menu, an extensive all day dining menu and also good value set lunch deals. It is a good place to get a quick dinner before a movie or a leisurely meal with the family. It can also be a place to unwind with wine or beer in the evening.
