Da Paolo Pizza Bar @ Holland Village is located in Chip Bee Gardens, across the road from the main part of Holland Village. It is situated midway in a row of shops along the Jalan Merah Saga. The other shops were mainly f & b outlets, including restaurants such as Baker & Cook, Da Paolo Gastronomia, Mai Thai Restaurant, Sunday folks and the Daily Scoop. Not having been in a while, we were surprised to see so many new shops in this neighbourhood. Looks like another place to explore further in the future!
With the low ceiling and a huge awning covering the pavement to keep out the sun and rain from this non-airconditioned space, Da Paolo Pizza Bar @ Holland Village was a very dark place even in the middle of the afternoon. The darkness was compounded by the dark-wood finish and cow-hide ceiling. Most of the diners gravitated to the bright side.
As its name suggests, Da Paolo Pizza Bar @ Holland Village is a very casual Italian eatery. You can find the usual Italian dishes on the menu. We selected a Fiorentina Pizza ($25) and Crab Cakes ($22) from the PizzaBar menu.
The crab cakes were a good appetizer. The portion was small but the taste of crab was rich and concentrated. We would certainly order that again.
The Fiorentina pizza had toppings of salami, sauteed spinach and a runny egg. It was a pizza which was good but not great. The crust was thin and flakey and the salami and egg toppings were nice. The spinach provided an extra layer of taste and lifted the dish somewhat. The overall taste was good but predictable. Service at Da Paolo Pizza Bar @ Holland Village was efficient but we did not detect any traditional Italian hospitality. We had expected a more friendly and relaxed pace in this neck of the woods.
