Laurent’s Cafe @ Robinsons and Mark & Spencer Food Hall are the new food outlets that have set up at the basement level of Robinsons department store at the Heeren, Orchard Road. Which is about time. Since the departure of the coffee place in the basement some months back, there was no place for a quick drink or snack in this very beautiful store. We stopped by at Laurent’s Cafe to see what they had to offer.
The basement space is quite spacious and was decorated in a cozy country style. They have a menu that contains the usual cafe foods like pasta, sandwiches, pies etc.
I decided to try a croque monsieur sandwich ($16) as a quick snack. It was presented quite simply – two pieces of toasted bread with ham and cheese with some salad on the side. Hopefully it would taste better than it looks, but sadly, that was not too be. It was a surprising hard piece of toast. Puzzled, I scrapped off the cheese and was shocked to see what was underneath. A piece of blackened toast.
It was truly disappointing to see that such a badly burnt piece of toast could leave the kitchen on a plate. This was brought to the attention of a staff member who offered to replace it. I declined the offer as time did not permit waiting for another sandwich to be made.
