Jia Wei Chinese Restaurant (家味) is located in Hotel Grand Mercure Roxy. Although cafes and restaurants are sprouting up daily in Singapore, full service Chinese restaurants in Singapore have not really increased much. Jia Wei Chinese Restaurant is one of the few full service Chinese restaurants in Katong. They serve modern Cantonese cuisine.
The Jia Wei Chinese Restaurant is tastefully decorated in contemporary Chinese style. They have a full Chinese restaurant menu with the usual staples – seafood, meats, dim sum, soups, noodles & rice. There are also a number of their own creations such as the Jia Wei Seafood Fried Rice with Caviar; Stewed Vermicelli in Opal Leaf, Deep Fried Soft Crab with Salted Egg & Creamy Lemon Sauce and deep fried cempedak ice cream.
Many of the dishes are served Western restaurant style – in individual portions. We ordered a selection of dishes.
The Braised Fish Maw & Seafood in Rich Chicken Stock ($32) was really thick and creamy. The taste was rich and full of seafood flavours. Very good, but a tad expensive.
We also ordered a Barbecued Peking Duck ($65). It was very well prepared. The skin was crispy and expertly sliced off the bird. We do like to eat the meat with the skin and asked for half of the duck to be served as it was. The meat was tender and with the right amount of fat. At $65, we thought that this was a reasonably priced dish.
We tried the Deep Fried Prawn with Salted Egg & Almond Flake ($28). This was one of their signature dishes. It was very good. The salted egg yolk coating the prawns with almond flakes added a layer of taste and crunchy to the juicy crustaceans. Good enough to overlook any high cholesterol issues. Cut back on something else.
Finally, a healthy dish – Braised Spinach Beancurd with Assorted Mushroom & Dried Scallop ($20). This clean-tasting dish was a contrast with the strong-tasting dishes preceding it.
Overall, the ambience and food at Jia Wei Chinese Restaurant was good but dining here was a bit pricey.
Their have Executive Lunch and Dinner Set Menus Yum Cha, or traditional Chinese High Tea,available every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm for dim sum.
Do note that although its address says East Coast Road – the main entrance is actually from Marine Parade Rd. It is opposite Parkway Parade.
