If you are ever in the MacPherson or Kallang industrial estates walking under the hot sun, you may be dreaming of a cold drink in a nice cool cafe; and you may think that you are seeing a mirage if you chance upon floating bicycles at Le Cafe. It is not a mirage but a dream come true. The floating bicycles are part of the decor of a small air-conditioned cafe simply called – Le Cafe. Le Cafe at Kallang Pudding Road serves iced coffee and other beverages as well as affordable food in a cosy space. “Le”means Happiness or Joy in Chinese and Le Cafe certainly can bring a little happiness by being a cool oasis in a drab industrial environment.
Le Cafe at Kallang Pudding Road is located on the road level of one of the more modern looking buildings in the area. The cafe has full height glass panels on two sides. Its white walls and colourful chairs make the cafe different and attractive in the midst of the surrounding dour industrial buildings. The decor takes full advantage of the extra high ceiling. Many hip cafes have a bicycle or two as part of the decor. At Le Cafe, the bicycle decor theme reaches new heights – two bicycles are suspended from the ceiling!
Le Cafe serves the office staff in the area but is also a very pleasant spot for visitors. If eating and drinking in the canteens of flatted factories is not exactly your cup of tea, Le Cafe provides a great alternative. It is bright and clean and serves good coffee, sandwiches, salads and cakes. It also offers local set lunches. The prices are very reasonable. A latte is $3.50. No GST or service charge is added to the bill.
Like many cafes nowadays, it is a semi-self service eatery. You place your order at the counter and pay. The food and drinks will be served to you. Help yourself to the utensils. You can also help yourself to iced water.
We ordered a lunch set of Teriyaki Chicken with Rice ($8.50) and the Beef Burger ($9.50). The portions were quite generous. The Teriyaki Chicken was deep-fried and was more like chicken chop. The look and taste were pretty average – not bad but not much more could be said about the dish. The burger was the better choice. The beef patty was thick and juicy and quite tasty. The fries that came with the burger were hot, crispy and not oily.
On the whole, Le Cafe is a pleasant cosy cafe. The unusual decor aside, it offers a simple deal – a comfortable environment, good coffee and decent affordable food. Finding such a place in the middle of an industrial area dominated by factories and warehouses certainly brought us more than a little happiness.
