Nine thirty in the morning is a good time for brunch and Ninethirty at East Coast Road is a good place to have weekend brunch. The Ninethirty Restaurant by Awfully Chocolate is a cosy place to enjoy the cakes and ice cream of Awfully Chocolate. They also offer noodles, burgers and mains like pork chop, braised beef, mussels and fish. Hot and cold chocolate drinks, chocolate coffee and even chocolate martinis are available. All day breakfast is served on weekends and public holidays.
The Ninethirty Restaurant by Awfully Chocolate is at the junction of East Coast Road and Joo Chiat Road. Awfully Chocolate has been selling their chocolate cakes, truffles and other chocolaty treats from this location for some time. Their original concept restaurant, JooJoo, which offered grilled skewered snacks and an assortment of yakitori and grilled meats was here. That brave adventure into the restaurant business proved to be a miss. Happily, their new restaurant, Ninethirty, is proving to be more popular.
Ninethirty with its black and white slick exterior stands out in its environment without being overtly loud or offbeat. Inside it is decorated in the chic industrial style. It is not like a typical restaurant or a typical cake shop. There are two entrances. The dessert bar takes up most of the front space at the entrances. You can ogle at the beautifully crafted cakes and tarts and buy to take-away or order them to enjoy in the restaurant.
The main restaurant area is past the dessert bar. It is quite a large space with tables of different shapes and sizes which are reasonably well spaced out.
We were there for brunch and ordered Pancakes ($16) and a Tandoori Chicken Burger ($17). A cup of long black was $5. A bottle of iced water was served.
For the pancakes, there was a choice of “skillet, souffle or regular”. We opted for the souffle pancake which came nicely presented in a shallow bowl. Two pieces of pancakes were served with butter and orange peel in vanilla cream with maple syrup on the side. The souffle pancakes had a light, springy brown exterior and very soft whisked egg white inside. The pancakes had a good texture but by themselves had a very neutral taste. Drizzled with a little maple syrup and mixed with butter, vanilla cream and strips of sugared orange reel strips, the pancake dish became a most enjoyable light brunch treat.
The Tandoori Chicken Burger came with a generous portion of smokey sea salt fries. The fries were crispy with fluffy inside and were one of the best tasting fries we have had recently. The burger was made with grilled chicken and coleslaw. We found the chicken to be a little dry on its own. However, on the whole, with the delicious coleslaw in the equation, the burger was quite tasty.
We enjoyed our brunch at Ninethirty. The coffee was very good – smooth full-bodied and aromatic. The food was of good standard. The staff was very pleasant, efficient and attentive. The menu is quite varied and interesting. Ninethirty is certainly an awfully nice place for brunch and more. The good looking cakes and tarts by Awfully Chocolate would also tempt us to visit Ninethirty more often.
