Have a sip at Oberstrasse Cafe before collecting your passport from ICA

Oberstrasse Cafe

If you are going to collect your passport from the Immigration and Customs Authority (ICA) or have to be in the ICA Building at Lavender for any reason, you can check out Oberstrasse Cafe across the road. It goes by the very long name of “Oberstrasse  –  Cafe Coffee Shop Breakfast & Brunch Restaurant”. It is a nice cosy place for a cup of coffee, snacks or simple meal.

Oberstrasse - Cafe

Oberstrasse Cafe is located on the ground level of Kitchener Complex which, like many other Singapore building names seemed designed to confuse, is not along Kitchener Road but at the junction of French Road and Horne Road. The cafe is just a short walk from the Kallang Road Exit of Lavender MRT Station.

Oberstrasse Cafe is another cafe with the industrial style decor, complete with exposed shelves and a bicycle as accent piece. Overhead, there are  rows of interesting jar lights. The tables are quite well spaced out and there is a relaxed friendly atmosphere. The menu is fairly extensive. They offer all day breakfast items, pasta, sandwiches, rosti, baked rice plus sides and desserts.

You order and pay at the counter. The food will be served to your table.

We tried their Spaghetti Bolognese ($14) and Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich ($9.50). The Spaghetti Bolognese was a simple hearty dish. The pasta had a pleasant springy texture and was nicely coated with a tasty tomato sauce. It was a satisfying dish.

The Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich was very substantial and was served together with potato crisps and a generous portion of salad. The chicken was nicely grilled and was fork-tender and juicy. However, the sandwich was let down by the slightly chewy bread.

The coffee was light-bodied and mellow with a pleasurable aroma. A hot Americano was $4 and an Iced Latte was $5.50. Their desserts looked quite inviting. We would like to try a few of their sweet items when we next visit.

We liked the coffee at Oberstrasse Cafe. The staff was cheerful and friendly. As always, the fact that free iced water was served was much appreciated. Free Wi-fi is available in the cafe. The prices are reasonable, especially when you consider that no GST or service charge is added to the bill.  On the whole, we think that Oberstrasse Cafe is a very nice place to while away your time if you have to wait for an appointment at the ICA. It is also a pleasant spot for brunch or a quick simple meal.

#Street Fact – The British would not have named a street after the French and they did not. French Road was named after Field Marshall Earl John French of Ypres, a calvary commander of the British Expeditionary Force during World War I.
