Chye Seng Huat Hardware (or CSHH) is coffee roaster Papa Palheta’s flagship store. It has adopted the name of the former hardware store that it now occupies. The exterior remains unaltered. While many cafes try hard to be cool, CSHH is cool without even trying. In fact it is a cool cafe even though it does not even sound like a cafe or look like one from the outside.
It is one of the first ‘hip’ cafe to open up in the heritage district of Jalan Besar. Housed in an Art Deco shophouse, the decor blends chic modernity with the original hardware store look.
There is a large al fresco dining area at the side of the cafe. A courtyard that looks like a set for Zorro movie. We can imagine the masked hero jumping onto his waiting horse from the roof before galloping out onto Tyrwhitt Road
But this being tropical Singapore, the place to be in the daytime is the air-conditioned interior space. Here there is a 360-degree coffee bar where the baristas and their gleaming coffee machines work their magic. Coffee connoisseurs can take a seat at the counter and watch the baristas at work. I am no coffee expert but they do seem to put a lot of effort into each cup of art.
In addition to the usual types of coffee, they serve bottled cold brew coffee, with milk and syrup on the side for you to add according to your liking. Each one costs $7. I thought that it tasted even better than the usual hot coffee. Perhaps the lack of heat allows the palate to better taste the coffee or I just fell for the nice packaging that this cold coffee was served in. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Chye Seng Huat Coffee Bar.
In addition to coffee and drinks, Chye Seng Huat coffee bar also serves some food. Here is their food and drinks menu.
I decided to try their Asian Pork Collar Roll ($15). The braised pork was cooked till soft and went well with the crunch of cucumber strips and the soft rolls.
There were also quite a few types of tempting cakes on display. There was no time for that on this trip. But this is certainly a good cake and coffee kind of place. Overall, Chye Seng Huat Coffee Bar is a great place for simple food and coffee. The ambience and the passion of the staff here to make great coffee is also infectious.
