1 for 1 Brunch at Supply & Demand at The Esplanade

Supply & Demand Esplanade

The property agent’s mantra “location, location, location” seemed to ring true when we went for lunch at Supply & Demand at The Esplanade recently. We went to their outlet at Orchard Gateway a few months ago and the place was packed. In fact, Supply & Demand at Orchard Gateway seemed to be crowded every time we passed that place, on any day of the week. In contrast, when we went for lunch on a weekday at The Esplanade, the Demand was definitely low. Only a handful of tables in the large restaurant were occupied. Economics students will tell you that when demand is low, the supplier should either reduce supply or lower the prices. We are glad that Supply & Demand chose to lower the prices – by offering 1 for 1 brunch during lunchtime at The Esplanade from Monday to Thursday.

The full name of the restaurant bar is Supply & Demand Italian Southeast Asia Bistro & Rooftop Bar. It occupies a large space at The Esplanade in the area near the floating platform. It has a rooftop bar and al fresco dining area. The main dining hall on the ground level is tastefully decorated in a mix of modern industrial and old country style.

Supply & Demand has the usual Italian staples on the main menu, such as bruschettas, pizzas and pastas, as well as Asian and Asian-influenced items like five spice rolls, satay and otak otak fingers. There is a separate brunch menu which offers a wide variety of eggs and toasts as well as calzone, sausages and even steak.

We ordered a Parma Ham Pizza ($20) from the main menu. We took advantage of the 1 for 1 brunch deal and ordered a French Toast with Sausage ($$17) and an Egg Benedetto ($16) – paying only $17 for the two brunch items.

The freshly made pizza had thin crust and quite a generous amount of toppings. It tasted quite good.

The thick slice of French toast was slathered with lots of maple syrup and top with mascarpone cheese. We would give it high marks for presentation but a mere pass for taste. It was nice but felt more like a dessert. The sausage seemed a bit out of place in this dish.

The Egg Benedetto was served with salad. Perfectly poached eggs, gammon ham and cheddar cheese were sat on house-made bread and drizzled with Hollandaise sauce. The Egg Benedetto might not get very high marks for looks but it was a delicious dish.

We were tempted by the interesting desserts and ordered a Disaster in a Jar ($15) and  a piece of red velvet cake ($13.90). We had a long black ($5.50), cappuccino ($6) and a pot of Honey Yuzu tea ($9.50) to go along with the desserts.

The red velvet cake had a layer of chocolate on top. The cake was light, moist and tender with a noticeable buttermilk flavour. The chocolate added a slight bitterness giving complexity to the overall taste. The Disaster in a Jar had eclairs and brownies in a jar and topped with vanilla cream, bananas and berries. It was interesting and the mix of textures and flavours produced an enjoyable dessert. We thought the “disaster” (for us) was in the prices of the desserts – rather high prices (plus the usual service charge and GST) considering that the portions were not big.

The prices for the desserts aside, we had an enjoyable lunch at Supply & Demand at The Esplanade. The setting was very pleasant. The place was not crowded and it had a very relaxed feel. The 1 for 1 brunch deal offers good value for money. Supply & Demand at The Esplanade is a good place to go for lunch on Mondays to Thursdays, provided you can resist the temptation of their desserts.
