Sixty40 Cafe at Rochester Mall is a cafe by day and a bar by night. Live music is played on certain nights. Rochester Mall is just across the road from Star Vista in Buona Vista, but it does not seem to feature on our radar as a place to eat whereas Star Vista is getting increasingly popular. We decided to start exploring this quiet mall and our first stop was the Sixty40 Cafe
The Sixty40 cafe and bar has a utilitarian frontage and an equally plain interior although the red seats do perk up the place a bit. There is a small stage with sound systems for the nocturnal musicians and two modern digital dart machines take the place of dart boards at one end of the room.
The type of food that the restaurant serves can probably be summarised by the term “Western food” as it serves things like burgers, fish and chips and pasta. The menu is quite limited but the unusual feature here is their “design your palate” which allows for tapas sized items to be selected to form a platter. One item costs $10 each (some items are subject to a $5 surcharge) and three for $25. Here is the Sixty40 Cafe menu.
As most of the regular menu items looked too predictable we decided to order a 3-item platter – spring rolls, grilled squid and Spanish garlic prawns ($5 extra).
Initial impressions were good. The platter was very attractive. The garlic prawns were served in a claypot, submerged in a pool of bubbling hot olive oil. The prawns were quite small and salty. They were not de-veined.
The grilled squid was bland and chewy. They were also not very warm. We decided to dunk them into the prawns’ hot olive oil. This slightly improved the taste as the squid warmed up and absorbed some of the taste of the garlic in the oil.
The best item of the platter were the spring rolls. Very crisp and good tasting.
All in all, a wobbly start to our adventures in Rochester. We think Sixty40 Cafe is best viewed as a drinks place principally. Having beer and spring rolls will be a great way to spend some evenings here while listening to the live performances. They serve a reasonably priced set lunch on weekdays and there are attractive discounts on bottle purchases. The staff here were helpful and friendly.
