Magosaburou 燒肉孫三郎 (シンガポール) is a beautifully decorated modern Japanese restaurant hidden away in Ion Orchard. Walking through its discreet entrance into a long narrow passageway bathed in indigo light is like stepping into a secret world – quite unlike the brightly lit glitzy corridors of Ion Orchard. Walk up a few flights of stairs and you will enter a world where beef is king. Originating from Japan Kumamoto prefecture, Magosaburou is a yakiniku restaurant and its specialty is quality grilled Wagyu beef served with special dipping sauce.
The main entrance of Magosaburo Japanese restaurant in Ion Orchard is on level 5 which is actually the car park level. It has a tiny entrance on the 4th level of Ion Orchard. It is easy to walk pass Magosaburou without noticing it. If you enter the restaurant from level 4 be prepared to climb some stairs. Once you reached level 5, you will be greeted by a panel which is decorated like a lichen covered rock face. That is the main reception area. The dining hall just beyond that is under the glass dome of Ion Orchard with offers a great view of Orchard Road and Scotts Road.
The decor of this Japanese restaurant in Ion Orchard is modern and swanky with distinctive Japanese elements There is a sushi counter where you can see the chefs at work. There are built in BBQ grills on the dining tables.
Obviously, beef features heavily on the menu – Kobe Beef, Miyazaki Beef as well as Australian Beef prepared in a variety of styles including Yakiniku, Yakishabu and Sukiyaki.
Magosaburou also offers other Japanese staples such as rice bowls, sushi, sashimi and tempura. They have set meals and special promotions from time to time. Currently, they have rather attractively priced set lunch deals.
We went there for lunch and ordered a Miyazaki Wagyu Steak Burger Set ($16.80) and the Australian Beef Sirloin Sukiyaki Set ($26.80). The wait for the food to be prepared was not short. Iced water was served while we waited. The service was generally very good, as you would expect in upscale Japanese restaurants.
The Miyazaki Wagyu Steak Burger Set came nicely presented on a round wooden tray. The beef pattie was served with Japanese rice. The Wagyu beef had a buttery quality, both in taste and consistency. It had a dense non-greasy flavour and was most enjoyable, with or without the house demiglace sauce.
The Beef Sirloin Sukiyaki was served in a cast-iron hot pot which ensured that the beef was being cooked on our table. It also meant that the dish remained very hot throughout the meal.
Besides generous slices of beef, there were many other ingredients in the pot such as bean curd, leek and leafy vegetables. The soy sauce based stock was sweetish. The well marbled beef sirloin was tender and delicious. The Sukiyaki dish was a heraty and good one.
The Beef Sirloin Sukiyaki Set came with miso soup as well as ice cream and coffee.
We had a very enjoyable lunch at Magosaburo Japanese restaurant in Ion Orchard. The restaurant setting was very nice and allowed a good view of the Orchard Road-Scott Road interesection. The set lunch deals offered great value and the food was of good quality. We will be returning to Magosaburo soon.
