Heng Long Teochew Porridge in Tanjong Katong

The vibrant food scene in Tanjong Katong could boast of a wide variety of local food stalls but those craving for Teochew porridge had, until recently,  to look elsewhere. Heng Long Teochew Porridge now has an outlet in Tanjong Katong. Located at the junction of Parkstone Road and Tanjong Katong Road, Heng Long Teochew Porridge (兴隆潮洲粥)  serves a wide variety of dishes at reasonable prices.

Heng Long Teochew Porridge is a basic porridge stall and it does not pretend to be anything else. It does not look fanciful. It is not air-conditioned and the furnishing is functional. The main attraction there is the food.

The food is prominently displayed. There are numerous trays of cooked food under very bright lights – so that even the old Teochew ah peks will not have difficulty seeing what is available. There is also a fresh seafood station where you can pick the fish for the chef to prepare.

The system is that you queue at the counter and point out what you want to the staff. The staff are all in uniform so there is less chance of mistakenly placing your orders with the dressed down customers in slippers at the store. The food will be served to your table. You pay when the food is served.

After our recent bout of exceesive eating, we went to Heng Long Teochew Porridge  for a simple meal. We ordered Chinese sausages, long beans, braised pork, braised egg and bean curd skins plus 2 bowls of porridge. The porridge was served in a rather interesting way – with the rice neatly pushed to one side of the bowl. Maybe some knowledgeable Teochews can tell us why the porridge is served that way.

The serving portions were of reasonable size and all the dishes were good. The braised pork was really fatty – perhaps not the healthiest option but really tender and enjoyable.

Our total bill for the 2 bowls of porridge and 5 dishes came up to $15. We had a good simple meal for less than the price of an ice cream dessert nowadays. Heng Long Teochew Porridge in Tanjong Katong is a place we will want to return to. Judging by the queue and the many satisfied faces, we guess there are many who are glad to be able to find Teochew Porridge in Tanjong Katong.
