Emperor’s Meal at Kaiserhaus Restaurant (Closed)

Kaiserhaus Restaurant Cafe Bar

Kaiserhaus Restaurant in Capitol Piazza has a unique concept of offering cuisines of the former Habsburg Empire which at the end of the 19th century extended over Austria, Hungary, Northern Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and parts of Poland, Serbia, Romania and the Ukraine. We had been to Kaiserhaus for its affordable set lunch when it was newly opened (see The new Kaiserhaus restaurant at Capitol Piazza, Singapore). We return to try items on its a la carte menu and it turned out to be quite a heavy but enjoyable lunch.

Many would go to Kaiserhaus for their interesting range of wines and beers as well as their pastries and confectionaries. Currently, they have a tea set – Selection of Delicacies For Two to Share at $28++; as well as a beer promotion of Two Glasses of Hirter Craft Beer (0.3l) with a Beer Bite for $18++. Thier promotions and full dining menu and beverages menu are on their website.

We went to Kaiserhaus Restaurant for lunch and ordered a Duck Pappardelle ($21) and the Tafelspitz for 1 ($38).

Kaiserhaus Duck Pasta

The Duck Pappardelle was a satisfying pasta dish. The braised duck ragout in tomato and red wine reduction was very flavourful and enjoyable. The duck was meltingly tender and not gamey.

We were tempted to try the Tafelspitz (Gourmet Beef) because it was described as a favourite of Kaiser Franz Josef I, former Emperor of Austria, and a gourmet beef dish which was never missing from any of the Emperor’s state banquets. The ordinary patrons could not pass up the chance to eat like an Emperor. We had to choose whether to have a serving for 1 ($38) or a serving for 2 to share ($76). We opted for the former.

Seeing that we were mere plebeians trying to eat like an emperor, Kaiserhaus kindly provided us an instruction sheet with pictures to describe the various components of Tafelspitz and how to enjoy it.

Once we had figured how to follow the instructions, we really enjoyed the boiled beef dish. The side dishes of creamy spinach and crispy rösti potatoes were both very good. Even better stuff were in the copper pot – thick cuts of beef rump with mixed root vegetables and bone marrow. The tasty soup that resulted from boiling beef and vegetables was excellent – one of the most enjoyable soup we have had in a Western restaurant. The beef was tender and, when combined with the various other elements and the slightly spicy horseradish sauce, was really quite wonderful – a dish fit for a king. The portion was quite generous too – the serving for 1 could really be more than enough as a main course to be shared by 2.

Since we were supposed to be eating like an emperor and since it was the festive season, we went ahead and indulged ourselves by ordering an apple strudel ($11) for desserts. The traditional Viennese apple strudel was served with warm vanilla sauce. It was good.

We had a good Emperor’s Meal at Kaiserhaus Restaurant. Our waistlines might have protested but our palates did not and our tailors should soon be happy too.

A King is Born.
Merry Christmas.
