We thought it would be a good idea to end the year with a laugh at a stylish gastrobar in The South Beach, a new dining and partying enclave in Singapore city centre. The decor of LAUGH bar at South Beach is chic and sassy. The entrance opens up to a beautiful bar. Behind the bar, the chefs are at work behind a glass panel. Laugh bar at South Beach could pass off as an upscale furniture showroom with its variety of interesting chairs and sofas. There have bar tables with TV screens as table tops. Its walls and ceilings have witty quotes relating to laughter. Beautiful paintings and photos adorned its walls. Even its lamp shades and window blinds are interesting. Our introduction to LAUGH bar at South Beach is dwelling a fair bit on its interiors and furnishing because LAUGH gastrobar is not big on food.
The drinks menu of LAUGH at The South Beach runs into many pages. The usual suspects like beer, wine, rum, whisky, brandy, vodka and tequila are available. Their signature cocktails have interesting names like Ladies First, Inside Joke and Appley Ever After.
In contrast, the food menu is a one page affair – with just 10 items on it. To supplement it, there is a snack menu with another 7 items.
We ordered the Charcuterie Board ($30) and the Slow-Braised Beef Cheek ($26).
Iced water was served without asking together with wasabi bar nuts. The nuts were really quite delicious and addictive.
The Charcuterie Board arrived within less than 10 minutes. It consisted of 3 types of hams with fresh salad and pickled vegetables, a special mustard and a bread stick. The menu mentioned mini buns but we were told the chef decided to make bread sticks instead. The hams were good quality cured meats but we though they would have been more enjoyable if they could be eaten with warm bread or buns. We liked the pickled onions and the mustard sauce was probably the best element of the dish.
The next item was the braised beef cheek. It was attractively presented with colourful vegetables sitting on truffled mashed potatoes.
The creamy mashed potatoes was nice with the scent and taste of truffle clearly discernible. The beef was very good. The slippery piece of meat was tender and flavourful. There were stringy parts with patches of juicy sections. Each mouthful was luscious and delightful.
Overall, we had a nice meal in a very stylish and agreeable dining space with groovy music. The staff were friendly and service was excellent. The food menu at LAUGH is very limited. For food, there are better options in The South Beach complex – like ADHD and Vatos Urban Tacos. However, for drinks and snacks, the slick modish LAUGH bar at South Beach is a serious contender for gastrobar of the year.
