SPRMRKT is part supermarket, part retail store and also a self-service bistro, which should be a winning formula as it captures eating and shopping – two important aspects of life in Singapore. According to their website, the owners “…believe in taking casual gourmet dining and shopping for daily necessities and random gifts to another level of flavour and enjoyment.” It is housed on the ground floor of a shophouse on McCallum Street. We had breakfast there recently.
Most of the space in SPRMRKT is taken up by the dining area of the bistro. There are shelves lining two walls which display the retail items – a mix of fresh fruits, food items and household items such as brushes.
The decor is simple and cosy. We like the all-glass frontage which allows light in and the indoor diners to look outdoors, avoiding what would otherwise have been a rather claustrophobic feeling in the rather small space.
What is interesting about SPRMRKT is that a different menu is available for each day of the week. We were there on a weekend and the weekend brunch menu was what we had to work with. Details of each day’s menu is available on their website (link below).
The Oven Baked Eggs ($21) was our favourite item of the day. It looked and tasted great. It is a quite a large portion and could be sufficient for two. The eggs, tomatoes and sausages were the main ingredients. They managed to pull all the tastes together to make this a successful dish.
Our next items were Bacon Pudding ($16) and Eggs Florentine ($14). Although the names were very different, these two dishes were quite similar – basically variants of the classic eggs Benedict with different trimmings thrown in. The main differences were that one had bacon and the other had sautéed spinach to flavour up the dish. Opinions were divided – it depends on personal preference which taste one prefers. Both were well made. The eggs were perfectly done. The yolk consistency was just right, gooey but not watery.
Our final dish was the Beer Battered Fish & Chips ($16). This was the weakest dish of the day. The batter was heavy and the fish was so so. We would avoid this and stick with the egg dishes on our next visit and brkfst at SPRMRKT will be a more pleasant affair.
