Katong may be known for its diversity of food but for a number of years we could not find Penang food in Katong. We are, therefore, very happy to see that Penang Chiak has opened up an outlet in the food court of Katong 112 mall. We can now get simple delectable Penang food in Katong at reasonable prices.
We visited Penang Chiak when they had just opened in Beach Road (see our post Penang Chiak at Beach Road). We quite liked the food there. The items available in their Beach Road restaurant are on the menu of the Katong 112 outlet. They even have tasting portions like small Assam Laksa ($3) and small Curry Mee ($2.80), and you can also have rice with a variety of small dishes at Penang Chiak, Katong 112.
We ordered the regular size Penang Assam Laksa ($5.50) and the Penang Pork Roll Set ($5.50). Like in most food courts, you place your order at the stall and pay. The laksa was prepared immediately so we could bring it to our table. We were given a buzzer to notify us when the pork roll set was ready for collection.
The tamarind-based Penang Assam Laksa with thick white rice noodles(or laksa noodles) were as good as the laksa we tried in Beach Road. It was full of ingredients and the Assam gravy was well-balanced and enjoyable.
The Pork Roll (or Lor Bak) Set was freshly prepared so that the pork roll, bean curd and prawn fritters were hot and crispy. Included in the platter was century egg and preserved ginger. The pork roll was well made with flavourful spiced skins and delicious filling. Each of the items on the platter were nice. When eaten with the chili sauce and sticky braised or ‘lor’ gravy with ribbons of egg whites, the flavours of the fried items were enhanced.
We enjoyed the simple Penang street food at Penang Chiak at Katong 112. The food court at Katong 112 is quite a pleasant space. It is clean, spacious and generally not too crowded, especially in the evening. It is nicely decorated and has a better environment than many small cramped cafes we have been to.
We are happy that Penang Chiak has decided to open an outlet in Katong 112. We can now get Penang food in Katong in a nice comfortable setting. We are glad that the quality of the food is good and the prices are very reasonable.
