Barossa Restaurant & Bar at Esplanade

Barossa restaurant and bar

Barossa takes its name from the wine growing region of Australia and offers Australian-fusion food. Located on the ground level of The Esplanade, it has a long narrow space, dominated by a long bar, and a larger al fresco dining area with a view of the Marina Bay. It would seem like a cool place to have a drink and unwind in the evening. They play some cool music and they are also apparently known for its 3 Bs – Beef, Burger and Beer. We were there for lunch recently and tried their beef burger but did not have any beer – well, two out of three ain’t bad!

Barossa at The Esplanade Theatres by the Bay has three main sections – the indoor section where the bar is with bar stools and a few regular dining tables; a second section along the corridor which is not air-conditioned and the third section is right out in the open courtyard under the stars or sun, as the case may be. The indoor bar area is quite attractively decorated in a casual chic style.

We are not quite sure what is Australian-fusion food but as you can see from their menu, they have beef, burgers, pizzas, pastas some seafood, chicken and various sides and bar bites.

We ordered their burger, Barossa Beef & Bacon ($18), and the Half Yellow Corn-fed Spatchcock Chicken ($24). We were a little confused about the description of the chicken – whether it meant the corn given to the chicken was half yellow or the chicken was half fed; as you can see from the photos below, what was served to us did not look like half a chicken!

The chicken was nicely presented on strips of vegetables and a bed of mashed potatoes. The honey-glazed chicken was quite small but it was succulent and tasty.

The burger was also attractively presented on a wooden cutting board. The thick beef patty sat on half a bun and was topped by onion rings. The other half of the bun sat on top of the pile of fries and bacon strips. The beef burger was quite good – the patty was juicy and flavourful and we liked the thin crispy fries.

Although there were not to many customers while we were at Barossa, we had to wait quite long (about 30 minutes) for our food to be served. It was also quite difficult to get the attention of the service staff. The place was obviously under-staffed – there were only two of them who had to act as greeters, servers, bartenders, cleaners as well as cashiers. When we managed to get the attention of the staff, they were friendly and helpful. When the place was emptying and the staff had less to do, one of them kept coming by our table to topped up our glasses of iced water.

On the whole, we think that Barossa at The Esplanade is a nice relaxed place where you can get good food. In the evenings, it should be a convivial venue for drinks as well.
