Tomi Sushi @ Millenia Walk, almost like being in Japan

Millenia Walk Tomi Sushi - 2

Tomi Sushi Millenia Walk is one of the many new restaurants and food outlets that have  opened as part of the revamp of the mall that is situated between Suntec City and Marina Square.  Tomi Sushi originates from the Niigata Prefecture of Japan and is part of a cluster of Japanese restaurants that formed the Millenia Walk Nihon Food Street, which more or less replaced the old food court that existed there some time ago. The new revamped Millenia Walk is quite different and we like it because the food options are much more varied and abundant. It was hard to choose from so many dining options, but we eventually settled on Tomi Sushi because it looked like we were stepping into a small restaurant in Japan.

As you can see, the shopfront and interior design of Tomi Sushi Millenia Walk look so much like a small restaurant in Japan. Not a fancy one but a simple one we sometimes see either along a small street or in one of these dedicated food floors in department stores. It is a restaurant with a light wood theme, no frills decor and big menus with pictures.

Here are pictures of the Tomi Sushi lunch menu and a few random pages of their food and drinks menu. We decided on a sushi bento lunch ($38) and a few side orders.

The sushi bento was a generous spread of all kinds of traditional Japanese cuisine. A large platter of mixed sushi, some sashimi, tempura and soba. We had paid $3 more to exchange the usual miso soup for a bowl of soba.

The sushi platter itself could have cost $38 in some Japanese restaurants in Singapore. The sushi was very good – not gourmet grade, but at the high end of family dining standard of Japanese restaurants in Singapore. The rest of the bento items were also of the same high standard. We thought that the $38 sushi bento was a good value for money meal at a Japanese restaurant in Singapore. It may even be enough to be shared by two patrons with a small appetite.

We also ordered side dishes starting with the grilled eggplant with sweet miso sauce ($8). The eggplant was very juicy and creamy. The sauce was a bit too heavy. We skimmed off half of it and just a light coating was perfect with the eggplant.

Next was the grilled salmon belly ($12). These fatty sticks of salmon were lightly grilled and delicious.

Our final side dish was grilled sardines ($10). A more usual choice would have been grilled shishamo, but we decided on the sardines out of curiosity. The sardines certainly look tasty, but their taste was no match for the usual shishamo. The sardines were dry and had a heavy fishy taste. It was a good experience to try it, but we will go with the familiar shishamo the next time.

All that good Japanese food taste better with some sake, especially the grilled fish items. We selected a mid-range Manotsuru Junmai Nama sake ($30 for 300 ml). It was slightly dry and refreshing.

Overall, it was an enjoyable lunch at Tomi Sushi Millenia Walk. Price per person including sake, GST and tax was almost $60.
