The Year of the Red Fire Monkey started on 8th February 2016. Characteristics associated with monkeys include wittiness and playfulness. At the start of the Year of the Monkey, we thought it would be appropriate to visit the cafe with a playful name, 5 Little Monkeys. The cafe at Pico Creative Centre is a casual fun eatery which takes its business of serving reasonably priced good food seriously.
We visited 5 Little Monkeys Cafe when it was newly opened about a year ago (see post 5 Little Monkeys Cafe, Singapore – a hidden gem up in Pico Creative Centre). Not much has changed since – the nice decor and interesting chalk drawings on the walls are still pretty much the same. You still get a good panoramic view from the cafe. The one thing that has changed is the menu. The menu has been expanded and the prices have gone up a little. Pages from their current menu are below.
We went there for lunch and ordered an item each from their Peranakan, Fusion and Western sections – Chap Chye ($5.20), Hainanese Chicken Chop Rice ($8.90) and Gourmet Burger ($12). The food was served after a very short wait. While you wait, you could help yourself to water and condiments from the service station.
The Peranakan chap chye was good – well stewed, flavourful and mildly spicy. The Hainanese Chicken Chop was nicely battered and crispy. The baked beans and tomato based sauce was slightly sweet and tangy. The chicken chop was delicious and enjoyable on its own or eaten with plain steamed rice.
The burger, which came with fries and salad, looked impressive. It tasted good too. The slightly charred patty consisted mainly of lean meat but was still juicy. The bun was nicely toasted and the fries came hot and crispy.
We rounded off a good lunch with a piece of their house-made brownie ($3.80). It was warmed up and drizzled with chocolate sauce before it was served to us. The brownie was fudgy and chocolatey and very enjoyable.
On the whole, we enjoyed our visit to 5 Little Monkeys Cafe. The prices might have gone up a bit but they were still reasonable; and no GST or service charge was added to the bill. The staff were friendly and prompt with their service.
If there is something to gripe about, it will be the parking charges at the Pico Centre car park. Beware if you are driving. Parking there during working hours can cost more than a meal for one at 5 Little Monkeys Cafe.
We liked 5 Little Monkeys Cafe very much when we first visited it and had returned there a number of times. We are glad that a year on the cafe remains appealing and the quality of food is still good. We will certainly be going to 5 Little Monkeys again – but we must find a solution for the parking issue; maybe we can try and finish the meal within the “Grace Time – 20 Minutes”!
